The first guns in Columbus, Indiana were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The Conte factory was located on the east side of the city and produced pistols, rifles, shotguns and cannons. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte began making cannon barrels. He used a natural gas furnace to make his cannons. The first cannon barrel that was made in Columbus was called the “Indiana Cannon”. It was a model muzzleloader gun that fired shot from a long tube filled with lead ballast which helped stabilize the projectile as it traveled through the air. In 1812, Nicholas-Jacques Conte died and his son continued production at the company until 1838 when it closed down due to economic issues. At Loyd Manufacturing Company, James Loyd started making firearms for local militias and law enforcement organizations in order to better serve those needs. The company grew quickly and by 1850 had become one of the leading firearms manufacturers in central Indiana. In 1857, Jens Jensen established Jensen Firearmsighthouse in order to produce high quality firearms for export purposes. Jensen Firearmsighthouse would become one of Indianapolis’ most successful businesses and remain operational until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of money

In 1872, Congress approved legislation creating Fort Wayne University which would offer education leading to college degrees for men and women; this event marked a significant change in how American colleges handled training for future professionals (i.e., women did not become professional teachers until much later). After several years of construction, Fort Wayne University was completed on December 15th, 1875- making it oneofthe first universities west of Interstate 10!
