The first building in Columbus was a log cabin owned by John Pritchard which served as the town's courthouse from 1827 to 1830. A schoolhouse also stood in Columbus until it burned down in 1833. In 1835, the legislature authorized the erection of a jail and jailer's office within the limits of the new town and named George Wills one of its first citizens. By 1840, there were three stores and sixty-eight residents living in Columbus proper while seventy-six people lived on farms around it within six miles (10 km). In 1845, construction began on what would become Ohio State Road 3 (later I-65) which connected Indianapolis with Cincinnati; this stretch of road remains one of America's longest Interstate highways today. On November 10, 1850, two weeks after Indian Removal Act forced many Native Americans from their homes near Fort Wayne into northeast Indiana Territory where they were sold into slavery or given away as part of treaties negotiated with Great Britain and France respectively – including Columbus – more than 1,500 native men and women under age 30 had gathered at Fort Wayne for what would become known as "the great migration".
