Columbus, Indiana is home to a long and proud history of ammunition production. Ammunition has been produced in the town for over a century, and there are still today many businesses that produce ammo. The first Ammunition plant was built in Columbus in 1892. The company was started by two men, John Hays and Wm. P. Gentry, who had both worked at the Chicago Arsenal where they learned about artillery munitions. They opened a plant on State Street in Columbus and produced ammunition until it closed down in 1903. The next year, the Columbus Armory was built and became one of the largest arsenals of its time with more than 1,000 employees producing artillery munitions including 7-inch Rocket Gun shells and Howitzers. Ammunition production continued until 1918 when it was finally discontinued due to World War I prohibitionism. In 1922, an armaments manufacturing company called J & L Manufacturing Company was founded in Columbus by two businessmen named Joseph Ladd and Lewis Jarrell Jr.. The company produced rifles, shotguns, pistols and other firearms products under several different brands including Colt (1922), Winchester (1923), Remington (1924), Benelli (1945) etc.. In 1931 the company merged with Browning Firearms Corporation to become Browning-Hale Incorporated which continued to produce ammunition throughout World War II as part of American Military Arms Corporation (AMAC). During World War II Ammunition production ceased but resumed after the war as Allied Armaments Corporation Ltd., eventually merging into United States Munitions Corp., which continues to operate out of Columbus today!

For many years, Columbus Township continued to be home to some of the earliest white Americans; however, it also became known for its blacksmiths and farmers who worked together for generations until integration into the national community happened during the 1960s.
