In addition to its tourism value, Clarksville also has a rich history which can be seen throughout its streets and buildings including: -The Old Log House which is still standing despite being destroyed many times over; -The Griggs Residence which once housed both Mr. Griggs (a local dentist) and Mrs. Griggs (a well-known socialite) ; -Clark's Grocery where General George Armstrong Custer stopped for dinner on his way to fight at Little Bighorn; -And finally, the McKnight House which is still used as a family home today!

Clarksville is a small town in Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis-South Bend-Thousand Oaks metropolitan area. Clarksville was founded in 1827 by John Coffee and his family. It became a territorial community in 1834 and was chartered as a city in 1867. The commercial center of Clarksville developed around the Post Office and railroad station on the Ohio Central Railroad. In the early 21st century, Clarksville's economy has been based largely on its location within close proximity to Purdue University and other businesses in downtown Indianapolis. The first settler to arrive in what is now Clarksville was John Coffee, who arrived with his family from Providence, Rhode Island in 1827. Coffee built a log cabin near where he lived until 1830 when he moved farther west to start another settlement which he named "Clarksville." By 1840 there were eleven families living here and two stores had opened up; one operated by Capt Benjamin Fenton and one by Elijah Jealouson. Many people from Providence also came through this time including Rev Elisha Goodrich (1814-1886), pastor of First Presbyterian Church located just east of town on what is now State Road 362A. In 1847 Clairester Henniker purchased 600 acres (240 ha) of land north of town from Simeon Kettelbach for $600/acre ($24/ha). At that time it was probably one of the most valuable pieces of forested land east of the Alleghenies because it stretched all the way to Fort Wayne across Big Creek Valley then continued southward along today's US 6 corridor to Terre Haute, Indiana before terminating at Clarkson's Mill on Little Miami River about 25 miles southeast of today's Bloomington, Illinois border over I-65 & I-69 junction Many experienced farmers such as John Atherton then bought more land throughout this period including 3000 acres (1 km2) acquired between 1850-60 from David Freeport near present day Southport Township line east of town on what is now State Road 362B In 1863 Clarkesville became an incorporated village when all but three residents voted against becoming a city due to lack thereof business opportunities and restrictiveauga zoning ordinances which limited development potential The post office served as an important center for commerce until 1954 when it closed after serving only five customers per day clarkvillians have kept their own name for themselves ever since
