Chesterton, Indiana is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. The first mention of Chesterton was in 1814 when it was called "Chesterfield." The town was founded by John Chesterton and his wife Emma. In 1825, the town had a population of seventy-four and became a part of the Miami Township. In 1868, the Miami Township merged with Butler Township to form Butler County. In 1870, Chesterfield had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated community. In 1924, it lost its incorporation status and became an unincorporated place. In 1935, the post office moved from Chesterfield to what is now Evansville and that year it changed its name to Chesterton. In 1938, the post office changed again toChesterton after Francis Turpin donated one acre for that purpose. On September 8th of that year (the same date as present day) Chesterton's first school opened with thirty students in grades K-4 inclusive. That same year also saw the opening of Father Edward Sweeny's Catholic church which served as village hall until 1944 when it burned down due to weather conditions caused by Hurricane Floyd which impacted most parts of America on September 11th that year including Indianapolis particularly! One significant event in early history occurred on November 16th 1903 when J H Brady organized what is considered today's Chesterton Lions Club which met at his home for many years afterwards until Lions Clubs International merged with other local organizations into their larger organization in 1969! On July 5th 1938 Mr W G Edwards donated 100 acres (40 hectares) north east of present day Chesterton for primary agricultural use! This area has been known ever since as "Brady Park". Today the park includes over 4 miles (6 kilometers) of hiking trails perfect for those who love nature! There are two baseball diamonds adjacent to Brady Park as well as tennis courts and a playground which serves both district/high school age children and early elementary/middle school children alike! A variety of other activities are offered such as soccer games during late summer months or ice skating during winter months! It should be noted that Brady Park also contains several historic buildings dating back to this time including a stagecoach stop known locally as "The Good Shepherd" located just off I-465 about five minutes west from current day Brady Park; another old halt on US 65 known locally as "The Hastings"; an old mill prior owned by Daniel Boone; a gristmill operated by Captain John Purdy; two dwellings used by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during Indian Wars; two log cabins now used as residences - one belonging to Drs Barry & Bonnie Frazier who purchased it from Mrs Fields' parents after she died suddenly young while living there following her husband's death having held title thereto since before she did so ! It should also be mentioned that within walking distance from Brady Park are three restaurants - one Italian -one German -and one modern restaurant serving up some great eats!!
