It is home to Purdue University, the largest private university in Indiana, as well as two major observatories- one on the campus of Purdue University and the other at Mt. Rushmore National Park. In 1876, Western Electric Corporation became Associated General Electric Company (later GE), which was then acquired by Western Electric Corporation in 1955. Chesterton also features a large shopping center that includes several stores from both local merchants as well as national retailers such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney. The shopping center anchors what is now known as Chesterton's Main Street which runs along most of its length from Market Street to Center Road..

In 1836, the state of Indiana granted Chesterton incorporation as a town. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first store opened in 1840. A Methodist church was built in 1841 and a Baptist church was built in 1845. The population of Chesterton grew to around 50 people by 1850 but declined to 30 by 1860 due to lack of businesses and transportation options. However, the population increased again by 1870 due to the arrival ofrailroads which linked the community with Louisville, Kentucky. By 1880, chesterton had a population of 350 people and consisted of 15 stores, 10 hotels/motels, 5 churches and 3 schools. The growth of industry led to an increase in traffic on both local roads and the Express Road which connected Chicago with Indianapolis via Chesterton Township (later Posey County). In 1886, a express road between Indianapolis and Cincinnati was completed which added more impetus for development within the township boundaries; this also helped spur development within downtown Chesterton including new retail districts such as Market Street Center and Pioneer Square Park while also creating new employment opportunities for workers in various industries such as printing presses, shoe shops, meatpacking plants etcetera. By 1920 there were only 9 businesses left operating out of a total population of 1,500 people but this number increased when Crestwood Manor – an ambitious project that aimed to keep up with rapidly growing municipalities throughout Indiana –was annexed into Chesterton Township limits making it possible for residents from either side of the county line to live within one municipality despite living some distance from their workplaces or hometowns respectively In 1932-1933 an amendment were made to the State Constitution providing for self-government Within Unincorporated Areas through Townships form Indiana; this amendment repealed prohibition against townships having autonomy within their own borders although they still needed approval from state government before becoming operative In 1940 following World War II there began efforts by politicians on both sides of the aisle at both local level & national level to make chestsertonian society more equal & modernized; these campaigns included calls for independence fromIndiana’s centralized government especially during difficult economic times Although progress has been made over time (& particularly since 1984 whenChesterville became an incorporated city) chestertonian society remains divided along socioeconomic lines with large majorities supporting libraries/publishing/tech jobs over traditional manufacturing or service industry jobs Today many citizens feel that they are not able get ahead economically because their access To education is limited or even nonexistent while high concentrations Of poverty exist& social inequality continues
