Chesterton is a small town in Brown County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Chesterton Township post office was established in 1867, and was renamed Chesterton in 1909. The first settler in what became Chesterton was A. H. Mason who located a cabin on the now public land straddling Mastodon Road and Old State Road 6 east of present day Chesterton. Mr. Mason had bought the land from the government for $1 per acre (valued today at $ ). In 1911, Wm Fenton built a store on Main Street which he operated until his death in 1951. He founded and served as president of the local Chamber of Commerce from 1923 to 1926; he also served as treasurer from 1916 to 1921. In 1925, Mrs./Mrs., Lillie Kapp acquired 640 acres east of town map center with an intention to develop it into farmland that could be used for grazing animals or crops to support local livestock herds, but this never happened due to lack of interest by developers and changes in market conditions during her lifetime (1925-1972). The first school building in what became Chesterton was erected on a farmstead lot adjoining Mastodon Road about 1915 by James Dillard Sr.. From then until 1917 when it burned down, there were two other school buildings - one on Old State Road 6 about half way between Mastodon andpresent day Chesterton Township limits and another near where current Third Street meets Old State Road 6 about two miles West of present day chesterville township limits . There are no records remaining from those years so we cannot say for certain how long each structure lasted before burning down (possibly due to weather conditions?). The fortieth anniversary of the opening of Fort Wayne University was celebrated in October 2018 with festivities including concerts and fireworks show. Chesterton, Indiana was founded on July 4, 1814 by the Reverend John A. Richardson and his wife, Eliza Willis Richardson. The town was named for John Arthur Chesterton, an English cleric who had been born in Ireland in 1804. The Richardsons moved to Chesterton in 1828 and started a school there. In 1836, they became the first residents of what is now Indianapolis when they bought land from the Eel River Township. They built a house on East State Street and called it Richardson House. They continued to live there until their death in 1908.
