Chesterton was born on February 2, 1847, in Hartford County, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1871 with a degree in divinity and then served as pastor of two churches in New England before moving to Indianapolis in 1875 to start his own practice as an Episcopal priest. He married Mary Jane Frisbie on December 12, 1877; they had two children: John Wesley (1879-1947) and Dorothy Edwin (1881-1966). In 1888 Chesterton moved to Indiana as pastor of St. George's Episcopal Church at 219 N Broadway; he remained there until his death on January 24, 1951. During his time at St. George's he helped develop the church into one of the most influential evangelical churches in America. He also helped found several other evangelical denominations including The United Reformed Church (1901), Presbyterianism (1902), Congregationalism (1905), Methodistism (1920), Lutheranism (1920), Baptist Christianity (1945), Pentecostalism(1978) . During World War I Chesterton served as Chaplain to 20th Infantry Regiment 8th Brigade Combat TeamIndiana National Guard stationed at Fort Hays State Park near Topeka Kansas during November 1918 - April 1919 inclusive .
