The Village of Chesterton was founded in 1853 by George Washington Allis and James H. Allis. The first post office was established in 1854. On December 1, 1903, the village became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five trustees. In 1907, the name change to Vanderburgh County after its county seat, Terre Haute, Indiana. The town of Chesterton was platted in 1859 by Elisha Greenough and named for Arthur Conan Doyle's protagonist from "Sherlock Holmes". The post office operated at 6010 North Main Street from 1861 until it discontinued operations on November 15, 1906 due to low mail traffic; however, it continued to be called "Chesterton" until 1921 when it changed its name to Vanderburgh County because that is where the official county seat was located at that time. In 1908-1909 composer John Philip Sousa conducted music concerts at the old courthouse which had been built as a public school during the early 1800s; these concerts were also videotaped and are available on YouTube as "Sousa: A Symphony in Two Parts".
