Chesterton is a city in and the county seat of Chesterton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. The first documented mention of Chesterton is in 1814 when it was called "Chesterfield". In 1827, Colonel John Atwater erected a log cabin on what is now State Road 3 east of town. In 1828, he built a more permanent cabin and named it after his friend and business partner Richard Owen. The first school in Chesterton was organized in 1829 by Samuel Morse and David Whitaker with four children from their home. The first post office was opened in 1830. In 1840, Augustus Kelley donated land to the town for a church and millrace. A two-story wooden courthouse was completed that year; it served as the town's law court until 1959. In 1862, election results showed that George Stephenson had won handily against opponent Elijah Hicks; so the new government decided to rename the town "George Stephenson" instead of "Chesterton." In 1865, an addition to Fort Wayne's arsenal became available when General Oliver Hazard Perry acquired land west of downtown for artillery ranges; so Fort Wayne renamed its arsenal chestertonian after Perry's aide-de-camp general Frederick August von Donop (1802–1876). An early settler in Chesterton was John Hickey who arrived on horseback from Canada around 1800 along with his family and platted what would become Chesterton on June 1, 1800 according to records at Indiana State Archives under file number P567/1beta2a/1 (from plat book 6th ed.). John Hickey took up several acres surrounding present day Main Street between High Street & Elm Street where he built a small log cabin which still stands today known as Hickey House or also known as Hickory Hall (photo below). On October 7th 1800 US Post Office opened at this location naming chestertonian village JHickeyPostOffice located just southwest corner of Main & Elm Streets
