Chesterton was a settlement in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7 at the 2010 census. The town of Chesterton was founded in 1876 by Captain John Fenton and his wife Christina. It became an incorporated community in 1906. The name is derived from the words "chest" (a long room) and "erton" (a place). Captain Fenton had come toIndiana Territory with General Harrison's army during the American Civil War, and he returned to Indiana in 1865 as commissioner of Indian Affairs. He bought land near present-day Chesterton in 1876 and started building a fort on it that same year. When the Union Army conquered Indianapolis during the Battle of Fort Dearborn on November 11, 1871, Captain Fenton's fort surrendered without resistance. In 1880, Captain Fenton donated land for a school which would be named after him: Chesterton School District No. 1 schools were begun there in 1886 and continue to this day. In addition to giving money for school construction, he also served as trustee of the district from 1888 until his death in 1904. The post office at Chesterton was established on December 12, 1881, by order of Governor Nicholas Coyle; it continued operation until it closed on October 14, 1962. There have been many changes over time at the post office - most notably when its building was destroyed by fire on January 6, 1893 - but its traditional function as a place where mail could be delivered remains unchanged today!
Chesterton was born in 1874 in the town of Chesterton, Indiana. He attended school and then worked as a farmhand before becoming a teacher. In 1916, he married his wife, Lillian. They had two children. Chesterton died in 1950.
