The Chesterton community was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1868. In 1865, John Denton and his family moved to Chesterton from Overbrook Township, Pennsylvania. A post office called Chesterton was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1904, J.B. White purchased land near the village for a new steel mill that would produce aluminum cans for the American Can Company. The company built a dam on the river to power the plant; however, within five years of its construction, aluminum production had ceased and the plant was sold to another company. In 1925, Robert Ewing organized a group of men who were interested in starting an agricultural cooperative school near their farmsteads around Chesterton and other nearby villages; this organization became known as The Saturday School Union (SSL). SSL became one of the most successful educational organizations in Indiana during the 1920s and 1930s; it operated schools throughout Johnson County until 1954 when it merged with neighboring rural schools to form The Community Schools Corporation (CBC). After World War II ended, many families left Johnson County for better opportunities elsewhere; however, some people continued farming operations into the 1950s and 1960s; these farmers formed what is now known as The Reserve Association which helps maintain or improve local agriculturally based programs such as crop rotation or ground water management

The Chesterton community in Indiana experienced many changes during its history. On November 4, 1847, the first post office in Chesterton was established. It served the community of Bethlehem and surrounding area for only a few months before being moved to Fort Wayne. The town's first store was opened by Captain John A. Appleton on Main Street in 1849. In 1865, the United States Post Office moved from Bloomington toChesterton after it became clear that Bloomington would not be able to keep up with the growing population. On December 12, 1886, one of Chesterton's most famous residents died when his locomotive ran into a switch at Uniontown Junction while traveling to join another train headed northwest. His death marked the end of an era for Chesterton as well as its railroad industry. In 1926, a new school building was built on Elm Street in Chesterton after voters approved a $5,000 bond issue for the construction project. This building is currently known as Stone Academy School and still serves as the primary educational facility for all of Chesterton Township. Later in 1926, a small private hospital was constructed on North Third Street in Chesterville which became known as Monument Hospital after several important local figures were treated there including Mayor John Wirtz and Judge Edwin Ladd (the namesake of landmark courthouse located nearby). In 1931, two more schools were added to theChesterville school system- Dunwoody Elementary School and Hartland Middle School- making it five schools servingchesterville township citizens grades K-8thgrade combined. In 1935, chesterville township name changed from "Bethlehem"to "Chesterton". The change came about because both Bethlehem Steel Corporation and American Gas Company had their manufacturing plants located within walking distance of each other in downtown Bloomington so when one company relocated or closed down some time later (as happened with American Gas Company), it left behind a large amount of infrastructure that needed to be renamed or improved upon- such as street namesakes like Elm and Third Streets which are now part of popular tourist destinations around town! In 1951, chesterville township began annexing adjacent townships increasing its size from 11 square miles to 24 square miles over six years resulting in what is now called "The Newsies" annexation campaign where people traveled throughout neighboring townships trying to convince their elected officials to annex them too! At this point chesterville had become quite expansive with additional land brought inside via purchases (and sometimes gift) from neighboring communities totaling over 122 square miles! During this time period also saw growth in businesses such as pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer Incorporated who decided to establish their headquarters within walking distance of all residents followed by Ford Motor Co., Lilly Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (now Eli Lilly & Co.), Quaker Oats Mills Limited (now JBS Erectile dysfunction products), Mastercard International AG (&their subsidiary Visa) among others! All these companies made significant contributions towards economic development within our community culminating with Pfizer moving their corporate headquarters outstate into Indiana proper just prior to Breast cancer diagnosis which led them back east once again!! Finally we come back today 50+ years later and continue developing strong partnerships w/ various businesses both big & small across state lines!!!
