In 1865, the community had its first post office and within two years had a church, a store, and two homes. The first settler to arrive in what is now Chesterton was John Aiken on November 6, 1851. He came from Illinois with his family and platted land around what is now the town square; he named it "Chesterville". In 1870, mail reached the community from Asbury Park, New Jersey; chestertons took advantage of this service to send packages containing goods such as flour to their friends and family back home. When coal mining began operations in nearby Coal Hill Township in 1901,chestertons responded with enthusiasm by opening a small blacksmith shop on Main Street adjacent to the mine entrance. This structure still stands today as part of Village Hall Park - one of only a few remaining vestiges of an early Chesterton village center which once thrived with cultural events like dances and picnics along its banks during summer months pastorate by Revd Dr Edwin Schieffer (1912-1984). An added bonus for miners who found themselves without work during tough times was that they could buy produce from local farmers at market prices while supplies lasted - something which often helped keep families fed during difficult times when other forms of sustenance were scarce or too expensive outside these townsfolk' proximity alone! In 1915-16 when Union troops were stationed here for World War I purposeshey brought over gaslights from Indianapolis so that all citizens could enjoy public illumination at night time - something which continued into the 1920s when electric lights became available throughout most parts of America! In 1938 when anti-Semitism reached new heights across America following World War II new Salesian priests arrived here ahead of schedule to begin bible studies among locals through outreach programs called "Churchting" (the term then being used for such things as socializing within small groups) ...thus beginning what would eventually become known as "The Fatherhood Movement" here where boys began their formal education alongside girls starting at age 10! By 1951 there were more than 2200 students enrolled total...albeit some residents continued livingin tanning saloons/brothel districts off Main Street until shortly before its closure circa 1984 due to lackadaisical ownership changes!).Today approximately 150 people call Chesterton home including numerous descendantsof those original settlers plus many others who've since moved into the community ....all making up one pretty evenly divided populace!

In 1907, The American Tobacco Company moved its operations out of Indianapolis and into Chesterton because it felt that the city was becoming too competitive with Purdue University (then known as Indiana University). At this time, Indianapolis wasn’t as developed as Chesterton yet there were already many other businesses moving into the city during this time period such as Ford Motor Company which made it difficult for companies like American Tobacco to stay put. The American Tobacco Company vacated their property only two years later when they purchased a new factory complex located near Hammondsville – making them one of the last companies to leave Indianapolis before it became an all-pervasive suburb of Chicago over the next few decades. In 1937, The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) moved their headquarters from Philadelphia to Rockefeller Center across First Avenue from Wabash Avenue where they operated until 1971 when they relocated back upstate to New York City where they still operate today under various different names including NBCUniversal Entertainment Group (UNEG). Ayn Rand visited The American Tobacco Company building while she was working at Wabash Avenue between 1951-1953 which led her eventually to write Atlas Shrugged which took place here at Rockefeller Center across First Avenue from Wabash Avenue between 1951-1953
Chesterton, Indiana was founded on February 14th, 1837 by George Washington Stephenson. The town was named in honor of the British statesman and philosopher Arthur Chesterton. Stephenson had been inspired to found the town after visiting India and observing that many of the people there lived without fear of danger or persecution. The town quickly became a center for education and commerce, with a library, hospital, and mill being built within its first few years. In 1845, Stephenson donated land to the town for a school district, which helped spur growth and development in the area. By 1860, Chesterton had become one of the largest cities in Indiana with over 1,000 residents. In 1915, Stephenson died aged 90 years old, leaving his townships and properties worth millions of dollars to be used for local development.
