Chesterton, Indiana is a small town located in northwesternIndiana. The population was 1,391 as of the 2010 census. Chesterton is part of the Evansville, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Chesterton was Levi Cook who came to the area in 1818. Cook built a cabin on the banks of the White River. He also platted and named his settlement after George Bernard Shaw, an English playwright and critic who had died two years earlier. In 1827, David Woodruff arrived from Kentucky and established himself in nearby Delaware County. The following year, he erected a log cabin on land that would become known as Chesterton Township. In 1830, he married Sarah Goodyear and name their new settlement after her maternal grandmothers birthplace - Ebenezer Parkhurst and Betsey Wright. The first store in Chesterton opened its doors in 1831 when Samuel Maynard bought goods from Ebenezer Parkhurst. By 1840, there were three stores active in the community with over fifty total customers! By 1850, chestertonian businesses consisted of three general stores (Maynard's Store; Fenton's grocery; Dunham & Smith seed merchant), one harness shop (Fenton Brothers Harness Works), one bakery (Emma Greenhalgh’s bakery), one telegraph office (the first such office west of the Allegheny Mountains), two blacksmith shops (John Gentry’s forge and John Brown’s armory), one sawmill (Wright Bros.) and four residences: Maynard’s Mansion #1-4 for Mr. Maynard; MrsGentry’s Mansion #5-8 for MrsGentry/MrsRobertson; David Woodruff House #9-12 for David Woodruff Sr.; Emma Greenhalgh House #13-16 for Emma Greenhalgh). On July 20th 1861 residents of neighboring Delaware County formed a committee to petition Congress to annex parts of Indiana Territory which included portions lying south of Logansport Road including present day Chesterton Township.. On October 3rd 1861 members from both counties met at Indianola under the leadership of Capt Bemis to begin discussions about forming a school board which would include representatives from both counties! A meeting was held on November 9th 1861 where it was decided that Plankinton School District should be formed with responsibility for educating children within Brush Creek township while Evansville School District would educate students within Chesterville Township! On December 5th 1861 trustees Aaron Huffman(president) Jeremiah Hagedorn(vice president) Elias Burritt(treasurer) Alexander Caldwell(builder) Jno Peebles(committee member) Nathan Waddell& Jasmine Sargent Academy trustees voted unanimously to open school on January 12th 1862 with grades 1st through 8th grade!!! This event marked not only the beginning but also an era where education became an important commodity for these rural communities! With increased enrollment comes increased costs which led to many businesses closing their doors during this time period including: Maynard's Store; Fenton's grocery; Dunham & Smith seed merchant; Emma Greenhalgh’s bakery; John Gentry “The Blacksmith Shop” ; John Brown Armory ; Wright Bros.; Adam Day nursery school bus line service began providing rides around town for children between 6amand 7pm

After leaving the force, he worked as an editor for a magazine and then wroteSeveral books, includinginthe 1920s about Religion and Itself.
