Chesterton is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Chesterton area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 12,000 years. In 1812, Englishman John Floyd and his party were exploring this region when they came across the village of Fort Dearborn on the Monon River. Floyd named the settlement after General Dearborn who led American forces during the War of 1812. In 1854, a post office was established at Fort Dearborn and it remained in operation until 1907. In that year, it was renamed to honor George WashingtonChesterton being one of several places in America given this name (the others are Hartford, Connecticut; Aspinwall Wagon Wheel State Park in New Mexico; and Niagara Falls). As early as 1800s there were settlements near present-day Chesterton with people from Kentucky and Ohio coming here for land speculation or trade opportunities with Indian tribes living nearby. By 1830 many families had settled around what became Chesterton Village including Daniel Emmet and his son Jonathan which included three churches: One Congregational (1830), one Baptist (1850), and one Methodist (1860). Many famous Americans lived here such as Andrew Carnegie who built a steel works inran from 1901-1902 on adjoining land then donated it to Chesterton Village for use as a public park; Woodrow Wilson who attended Princeton University here before entering politics; Abraham Lincoln who served two terms as President of the United States; James Buchanan who served as Governor of Kansas before becoming Vice President under Ulysses S Grant; andUlysses S Grant's wife Julia Child where she ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress twice before becoming head cook at White House Administration. Heinrich Heine wrote "To think that I am living amongst these old Indians" while living among these pioneer settlers at what would become known as North Avenue between First Street & Second Street in 1830 while working on his farm north of town which he sold in 1835 to get into town business more fully he composed his poem "Pioneers". Thereafter North Avenue became known locally simply as "Heine Road".

The Chesterton community is located in the southern portion of Indiana, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis. It was founded by John Chesterton in 1871, and it has remained a small town ever since. The Chesterton School District provides public education for students in grades K-12. JohnChesterton was born on October 24, 1874, in what is now the United Kingdom. He immigrated to America in 1886 and soon found work as a clerk at First National Bank. In 1893 he met his wife, Fannieytha Keyes, and they moved to Chesterton together. They had two children: John (1915-2002) and Pamela (1918-2005). JohnChesterton became an American author and illustrator. His most famous work is the novel "The Grapes of Wrath". Many of his books have been turned into successful television series including "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Sherlock" series, "Dune", "Forrest Gump", etc. In addition to writing and illustration, John also taught English at Notre Dame High School from 1935 until his death in 2002. He remains one of America's most renowned authors and educators
Chesterton was born in 1874 in the small town of Chesterton, Indiana. He attended the local school and thenaney college for two years before becoming a teacher. In 1896, he married Emma Smith and they moved to Indianapolis. They started a successful grocery store. Chesterton was also involved in politics and served as Mayor of Indianapolis from 1925 to 1929. In 1934, he published his novel The Grapes of Wrath which became an international bestseller. After his death in 1946, his wife continued to run their store until her death in 1984.
