Chesterton is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,904 at the 2010 census. In 1850, John Davenport donated land to make way for what is now First Baptist Church which then began construction on its present building in 1851. A post office was established in Chesterton by Jacob Heins in1852 and operated until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1865, A&P grocery store opened and soon became one of Chesterton's most significant businesses. In 1870-71 when Centraliaopolis (now Chicago) lost its main water supply due to an eruption from Mount St Helens, villagers turned to groundwater sources for drinking and irrigation purposes due to lack of other options at that time.
