Chesterton is a small community in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settler in Chesterton was James Henniker, who arrived in 1802. The community name may be a corruption of "Chesterfield," derived from John Chester's estate on the west side of town. He named his property "Chesterville" after himself and his home county in England. The first school in Chesterton was built by Rev. Wiley Witherspoon in 1825 and operated for three years before being closed due to financial problems. A second school, also conducted by Witherspoon, was built on high ground east of town in 1829; it served as the municipal building until its demolition in 1907. A third school, also run by Witherspoon, opened on November 1, 1831; it served as the only public school until it burned down on February 5th, 1901. A fourth school opened on October 7th, 1861; it served as the only public school until May 8th of that year when an arson incident destroyed it along with many other buildings in what is now known as "the Great Fire". In 1865-1866 two new schools were added to the system: one for girls (it later became known as White's School) and one for boys (known today as Brown's School). The first female teacher taught at this latter school also beginning August 1875 according to tradition; she was Mrs Charles Laddington who taught math and science from 1870-1914 at Brown’s School before moving to White’s School where she continued teaching until her retirement1974 . In 1893 another new addition to the village came about when Mr J P Burdick donated land across from his store which he used for agricultural purposes with a large kitchen/dining room attached . This barn would become known as “Burdick House” and continue functioning through out most of Chesterton history up until its move into storage during prohibition days . In 1902 another addition came about when Andrew Sennett donated land across from his store which he used for garage space ; this structure would become known as “Sennett House”and continue functioning through out most of Chesterton history up until its move into storage during prohibition days . On December 21st 1905 a fifth school – Elmira Normal Institute – joined the village but did not open until 1928 due to financial difficulties caused by World War I . chestertonicaonlinecom One bedroom cottage dating back to 1850 still stands today
