Chesterton is a small town in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Evansville–New Albany, IN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chesterton was Nicholas Granger, who arrived on July 2, 1829. He and his wife Marge (née Pope)and their three children were the only ones to arrive in that year.Nicholas' father had come over from England two years earlier as part of the Indiana Territory Company's search for a site for a new state capital. When they reached Chesterton they found it uninhabited and decided to stay until they could find someone to settle it. They surveyed their land and filed a claim with the government on November 20, 1830. One of Chesterton's early entrepreneurs was John Hanks who built a gristmill in 1835 and started selling flour to local farmers. In 1839 he married Anna Maria French and moved to New Albany where he began developing what would become one of Indianapolis' most featureless neighborhoods – Frenchtown – into an upscale community full of shops and homes by 1840. In 1843 Abraham Lincoln visited these same agricultural pioneers when he was campaigning for election as President; his speech before the Northwest Indiana Agricultural Society is still studied for its insight into American political life at that time: "I am not locked up within any particular section or locality... I am sure you will agree with me that we are all Americans." As president Lincoln issued Executive Order 9066 which ordered all African Americans living in Union territory to leave or be arrested; many did so without knowing why or how they would be deported back home. This event led some Chestertons—including James Akins—to organize themselves into what became known as the " black Republicans" during Reconstruction era efforts to create an idealized vision of white Republican society while excluding African Americans entirely from participation or influence inside that imagined community model despite deep seated racism toward all groups). Thereafter many residents chose instead to remain quiet about their past experiences during this difficult time period while waiting out new opportunities awaiting them outside of Union territory under newly created legal limbo called Freedmen's Bureau rule which allowed citizens access both voting rights and property ownership without having gone through Redemption process required for citizenship under Civil War Constitution

Chesterton is located in Porter County, Indiana. It was founded by James Fenimore Cooper and named for him. The town has a population of about 508 people as of the 2010 census. Chesterton was originally an agricultural community, but it has since become a bedroom community. The history of Chesterton goes back to 1836 when James Fenimore Cooper purchased two-thirds of the land that makes up present-day Chesterton from Andrew Jackson Goodnight. Over time, other settlers arrived and many development took place in this initial nucleus of Chesterton Village. In 1866, coal mining began operations in Porter County and soon after trade with Chicago intensified due to increased demand for coal from factories across the United States. This led to increased development around Coal River Junction where miners would bring their goods back home on wagons filled with coal for sale at local stores or for transport further downriver to larger mines closer to civilization. By 1907, chestnut production had become so significant that chestnut trees were being grown on much of the surrounding farmland, contributing significantly to economic growth throughout Porter County during this time frame The late 1800s saw dramatic changes take place within American society which affected all aspects of life - starting with social unrest among working class Americans culminating with technological innovations such as railroadroads making possible mass production; these developments impacted industries such as farming while others such as manufacturing declined leading ultimately to increased unemployment rates among workers employed in those sectors during this period As technology advanced new methods were developed for extracting resources including water depletion through fracking which lead eventuallyto large reservoirs dotting various regions across America; shale gas exploration followed subsequently resultingin over 1 trillion cubic feet (30 million m3) equivalent recoveries reported globally between 2014-2018
Chesterton was born in 1887 in the small town of Chesterton, Indiana. He attended school and then worked in a local grocery store before moving to Indianapolis to attend college. After graduating from college, he began working as a sales representative for J.C. Penney and later became its president. In 1935, he married Elizabeth Gaskell and they had two children. For many years, Chesterton served as an honorary trustee of the University of Notre Dame and helped Toomer's Park develop into one of Indianapolis' most popular areas. He died in 1964 at the age of 86.
