Chesterton is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,689 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Chesterton was Nicholas Applegate in 1824. He and his family were the first to live on what is now Chesterton Township. The community name comes from the Reverend Arthur Chesterton who donated land for a Presbyterian church in 1875. The first school was built in 1886 by Mrs. Julia Hinton and taught children from three to twelve years old. Aiding in teaching were two students from nearby Greendale who helped with lessons every other day while their mothers gardened around the house. A new schoolhouse was built in 1912 and served as both a public and private school until it burned down in 1951. The village of Chesterton had its beginnings as a Lutheran Church colony near present day Seymourtown, Indiana on Windy Creek Road east of present-day Clintonville, which started out with just 10 residents organized into 12 families on October 11, 1875 led by Reverend Arthur Chesterton with help from Mrs Anna Crouch (1840 – 1901). Reverend Arthur's brother also participated when he founded Defiance College northwest of Chicago but that college closed operations due to financial problems within one year so this may be considered FatherChesterton's original educational venture for what would become known as "Chesterton". In 1906 an addition to defying bankruptcy became possible when James Goggin bought Pittsburgh's Carnegie library system which included all 3 branches including that located here including $1 million donation giving birth to "Indiana Library Company" or "ILC". ILC leased back facilities at 7 N Meridian Street between 1914-1920 before moving again (this time across state lines) at 246 W North Avenue during 1924-1930 becoming "Indiana Cooperative Bookstore" or ICC serving not onlyChestertonian citizens but also members of adjoining townships east of ILC owned by ILC such as White Hall (now South Bend), German Village (now Terre Haute), Greenwood Heights (now Goshen), Harvey Park (now Noblesville), New Brighton Heights (now Valparaiso), Carmel Highlands (later Crawfordsville) etcetera up until its closure following World War II along with many other bookstores throughout America closing because of wartime restrictions on marketing materials like paper books being shipped inside open cargo containers filled with explosives
