Chesterton is a town in Jennings County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Chesterton was John Pemberton and his wife Martha on a farm east of present-day Chesterton. In 1827, Joseph A. Brown and his wife Sarah founded the village of Westville on their home place about northwest of present-day Chesterton. This village lasted until 1846 when it merged with Two Rivers to form the new town of Chesterton. In 1849, George Wittell settled in what is now Chesterton and began marketing goods from his farmstead which he called "Wittell's Mill." By 1860, Wittell had built a large frame house on the mill wharf for his family and their servants. The mill continued as an important economic factor in the community until it went out of business around 1925; however, its architecture still remains standing today as one of the few remaining examples of antebellum period architecture in Indiana In 1870, Jephtha Ball bought Wittell's Mill and began manufacturing flour into bread products which he distributed throughout central Indiana via wagons pulled by horses or buggies across open country roads. Ball's company became one of the largest flour mills in centralIndiana during this time and even produced cheese from milk brought overland from Illinois . Over time many other businesses have been founded within or near contemporary Chesterton including two gas stations (the first opened by Clarence Dukes in 1950), several churches (oneMethodist, one Catholic), three schools (elementary through high school), two restaurants/cafés (Buffalo chicken Wraps & French toast at Joe's Place & Pancakes at Chick-Fil-A), two auto parts stores (Goodyear/Carrs hardware & Parts Unlimited) and five breweries - all descendants ofBall’s original flour mill buildings that are still extant today! Today much activity takes place within walking distance including independent retail shops such as Barnes & Noble bookstore chain located just east off US 421 next to Goodyear Tire Store;Lafayette Christian School; local farmers market every Saturday morning starting at 7am;and six professional organizations including American Legion Post #534(National Guard unit);Indiana State Police Troop E(a state trooper detachment);and United Methodist Church located adjacent to First National Bank building on Main Street which has been property owned by our congregation since 1886

Chesterton is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 15,953 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Hoosier Hills region. The first settlers in Chesterton were two families from Maryland who came to Indianapolis in 1827 as part of the abortive effort to build an American railroad through central Indiana. They built a log cabin on what is now State Street and named it "Chesterton". A post office was established at this location in 1829, and later renamed "Chesterton", after Arthur Conan Doyle's novel Sherlock Holmes. In 1836, John Cranch bought the land where Chesterton now stands for $1 and erected a sawmill thereon which became one of Vanderburgh County's most important economic engines during its early years. By 1840, chestertons had spread throughout much of central Indiana under various names including "Eaton", "Fenton", etc., until they finally settled on "Chesterton" by choice as their new town name. It wasn't until 1861 that chestertons voted to incorporate as a city with a limit of fifteen thousand residents within limits prescribed by state law; this vote followed passage by the General Assembly of an act setting forth guidelines for municipal government inIndiana (the so-called Antifederal Act). The following year saw construction begin on what would become Chesterton's first schoolhouse; classes began instruction here on September 10th, 1862. In 1865, when Fort Wayne was incorporated as a city adjacent to Chicago via annexation,chestertons Voting 2nd District chose not to annex into Fort Wayne but instead retain their own independent charter with limited voting rights within City Limits only On July 1st 1886 after many years struggle against prohibitionist forces seeking to keep alcohol away from citizens Prohibitionists succeeded in getting local voters to pass an ordinance limiting liquor sales within city limits only
Chesterton is a town in and the county seat of Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis– IUPUI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to settle in Chesterton was David Tappan in 1819. The area that now includes Chesterton was dense forest until the early 1800s when farmers began to grow rice, wheat, corn and other crops. In 1814, Isaac Watts discovered coal veins near present-day Chesterton and started developing mines there. By 1825, people had built a school and grocery store in what is now chestertontownship while others developed farms around the town center. In 1828, John Pemberton founded Pemberton County as a way of dividing land among his family members who had contributed land to organized country society. On October 1st of that year, Chesterton became the headwaters for Pemberton County with its first courthouse erected on State Street just east of present day I-465 (now US 12). By 1830, several churches had been built around town including one by Methodist missionaries Samuel Denton and George Stephenson which still stands today on First Avenue NE between Delaware and Posey Streets. In 1830 also came significant development with two railroads starting up nearby - one called the Indy Railroad and another calledthe Louisville & Nashville Railway companies were both based in Indianapolis but their tracks crossed into Porter County so they were known as "Porter lines". The first post office opened inChesterton on November 3rd 1830operationing under name "Newcastle". In 1836 a new courthouse was added to this structure with James Minton becoming JP for that year according to local records The soon after saw growth with an additional four stores being built along State Street north from First Avenue NE by 1840 . A church also replaced an earlier log building erected about 1840 northwest corner of Second Avenue NE and Elm Street . Also during this time period two gristmills were built north side of First Avenue NE between Walnut Street NW and Turtle Creek Drive NW . One operated until 1865 while another continued operations until it burned down in 1903 . By 1850 there were over sixty residents living within what is now chestertownship although only ten percentof these lived here permanently
