At that time there was a large population of hunters in the area and many people enjoyed using firearms to hunt game. One of the earliest airguns used in this activity was an old muzzleloader called the Old Gun Club Rifle. This rifle consisted of an airgun barrel with a shotgun stock, which could be fired by pulling the trigger. due to its simplicity it was very popular among hunter-gatherers and other outdoor enthusiasts who enjoyed shooting targets from a distance. In 1817, John Fenton discovered caves near what is now Chesterton while exploring for gold in central Indiana. He named these caves "Fenton's Cave" after his predecessor on the exploration team, James Fenton. The first settlement in this area was made at "Fenton's Fort" on December 4, 1817 by Anthony Wayne and his family. This fort served as a trading post between Indians and settlers until it burned down in 1825. During this time period airguns were also being used for hunting purposes as they were not considered dangerous enough to be classed as firearms

Chesterton is a small, rural community in Johnson County, Indiana. The population was 1,158 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Chesterton was organized on October 15, 1871, by order of the General Assembly. It was named for Arthur Conan Doyle's father, George Chapman. George Chapman founded the first store in Chesterton and it operated until 1902. He also built a log cabin near the present day Post Office to serve as the first town hall. In 1892, school Superintendent John Witherspoon purchased land adjacent to what is now Chesterton High School and established a school district with teachers from other towns in Johnson County. In 1935-36, Mr. Witherspoon donated land for a new high school which became Chesterton High School today. Chesterton has had its own newspaper since 1896 called The Sentinel (later The Courier). Chesterton is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Chesterton were Alexander and family who arrived in 1814. They built the first permanent house on the current site of Chesterton High School. chesterton post office began operations on October 6, 1847. Chesterton is located at (41.512604, -87.577906). It takes its name from George de la Rochefoucauld and his chaplaincy which was established there in 1764. de la Rochefoucauld had been a French missionary who had traveled throughout India and China before coming to India to work among the British Indian troops stationed there during the late eighteenth century. He later returned to France and started what would become known as La Chaplainie des Indigènes (The Indian Chaplaincy), an organization that helped religious refugees enter England after independence from France in 1947. In 1794-95 John Millington, an American Revolutionary War veteran and merchant living in Danville Township,Indiana set up a school for Native Americans called "Milton Academy" which he opened along with his wife Elizabeth Millington on November 5th of that year near present day White Hall Road/Route 32 just south of Interstate 69 where they still operate today under their original name: Milton Academy Incorporated There are several theories about why Chesterton got its initial name; one theory suggests that it came from Colonel John De Forest's unit which disembarked here after crossing the Great Lakes aboard Canandaigua Riverboats on July 4th of 1756; another theory suggests that when Captain Abraham Warner founded Fort Wayne in 1802 he named it for General Marquis de Lafayette who had fought with him during the French Revolution; yet another theory suggests that Reverend Richard Owen chose this name because it reminded him of a book by Sir Thomas More entitled "A History of Islam". In any case, everyone seems to have been pleased with whatever name they received so long as no one managed to get it caught on fire or got run over by a car while driving home from work! In 1865 residents voted 3-1 to move closer to Indianapolis so they could begin shopping nearer thereto instead of having to go all the way around town before finding anything they wanted In 1871 local resident Andrew Juhl moved into what is now known as Chesterton Village along White Hall Road/Route 32 adjacent to then undeveloped land now used for parking Lot #2 across from US 56/I-69 . This part of town became known as “Chesterville” until annexation by Indianapolis occurred some time later . A post office operated at “Chesterfield” until February 1863 when it was renamed “Indianapolis” due to objections by nearby residents concerned about becoming too close Chicago & being thusly exposed both physically & politically To say nothing of our high rate Of crime etc... Chesterton was born in 1874, the son of a clergyman and his wife. He attended public schools in Indianapolis before attending Purdue University, where he studied law. Chesterton entered the legal profession but soon left to pursue a career as a writer. He published his first novel, The Saturday Evening Post's First Novel Contest (1914), while still in law school. After working as an advertising executive and writing several more novels, Chesterton decided to enter politics and ran for office as a Democrat in 1920. Although he lost, he became known for his sharp criticism of American conservatism and its lack of social justice. In 1932, he founded the Liberal Party of Indiana with the goal of promoting liberalism throughout the state. In 1938, Chesterton was elected to the United States Senate but resigned two years later after being diagnosed with cancer. He died at home on May 14, 1941, six days after receiving treatment for it at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
