Cedar Lake is a small, but rich history in the town of Cedar Lake, Indiana. The name Cedar Lake was given to the community by General James K. Polk in 1849 during his Indian removal campaign. The community was founded on a tract of land that had been donated by Judge John Wesley Smith. The first settler in Cedar Lake was Isaac Newton, who arrived in 1827. Other early settlers included Samuel Hays and Levi Coffin. In 1853, the community acquired its current name when it became an incorporated village. Cedar Lake was originally a small body of water located near the present-day city of Terre Haute, Indiana. When the area around Cedar Lake was surveyed in 1825, it was determined that only a few hundred acres lay within the current boundaries of what is now Terre Haute. The surveyor traveled to other parts of the state in order to find out if there were any other large lakes or reservoirs available for purchase. In 1828, when Cedar Lake was first mentioned in connection with property sales in Indiana, it consisted of only a small part of present day Terre Haute. By 1832, however, much of the land surrounding Cedar Lake had been purchased by farmers from Illinois and Missouri. The initial construction on Cedar Lake began in 1834 and it became operational as an artificial lake no later than 1840. By 1850, however, Cedar Lake had grown so large that it required additional space and construction continued until 1861 when it was drained and re-opened as an open water reservoir.
