In 1830, four men named Griggs built a sawmill on the banks of Cedar Creek while they were exploring new territory in Sullivan County. This mill became known as Griggs & Company because its founders had purchased it from John Griggs (a partner with Isaac Backus) previous year. In 1831,Griggs & Company erected a gristmill on Deer creek which gave rise to Deersfield Mill later that year also located in nearby Deersfield Township across Deer creek from present-day Cedar Lakeshi
Cedar Lake was first settled in 1827. In 1853, the city of Cedar Rapids was founded on the site of Cedar Lake. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President in 1850 and 1851.
