Cedar Lake is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Kokomo Micropolitan Statistical Area. Cedar Lake is located on the eastern edge of the Kankakee Mountains and has a ZIP code 56501. The community was founded in 1836 by settlers from Ohio who arrived via the Illinois River. Businesses first began to be established here in 1847 when a post office was opened. In 1892, Cedar Lake became a village with its own government and school system. In 1905, Cedar Lake became an incorporated city under the name of Kokomo. At that time, it had a population of over 2300 people and was home to two banks, four churches (two Baptist and two Methodist), three businesses (two stores and one restaurant), six physicians (five dentists and one optometrist), and twenty-four families. However, by 1930 only two businesses remained within the city limits; both were closed down for lack of customers or competition from other towns in Kokomo's larger metropolitan area. In 1970, Kokomo passed an ordinance establishing municipal boundaries which limited its size to only 3 square miles; as result of this change in boundaries, all but six buildings within city limits were destroyed or converted into housing units during that decade alone. By 1990 however – after years of growth – both downtown business districts and most residential areas had been reestablished within city limits with their own police department/fire departments as well as comprehensive public services available throughout their respective neighborhoods - including recreation opportunities outside city Limits parkland accessible through Neighborhood Centers located throughout each district - making CedarLake once again one vibrant community complete with ample opportunity for economic development while still possessing its unique character that has made it such an inviting place to live,.

Cedar Lake is a small, but beautiful, Indiana town that has been around since the early 1800s. The area now known as Cedar Lake was first inhabited by the Potawatomi people. In 1811, the United States government designated this area as part of what is now east-central Indiana. The town was founded in 1817 on land donated by General David Dixon. Cedar Lake gradually grew into a small community with a population of about 350 people in 1850. By 1900, the population had grown to 1,500 people and it remained relatively small until the late 1960s when significant changes took place in Cedar Lake and adjacent communities. The first major change to occur in Cedar Lake occurred during World War II when more than 2,000 soldiers from nearby Decatur were drafted into the war effort and stationed at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Many of these soldiers are buried at Fort Knox Cemetery which forms part of the downtown core of Cedar Lake. Over time, other changes have also taken place in CedarLake including the formation of Elmira-North Decatur Community School District #1 (now Elmira-South Decatur Community School District #1), efforts to attract businesses and industry to town and growth of housing development within town limits which has resulted in increased access to goods and services located within walking or biking distance of downtown CedarLake. Today, downtown CedarLake continues to be an important center for economic activity with several restaurants and bars available as well as numerous shops and services available for residents and tourists alike. Additionally, there are several large parks located within walking or biking distance of downtown that offer features such as playgrounds, baseball diamonds/softball fields and hiking trails perfect for all ages!
Cedar Lake was originally called The cascades. It was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the early 1800s. The area was surveyed and named in 1824 after General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time. Cedar Lake became a part of Indiana in 1836 and became a county seat in 1840. In 1865, Cedar Lake was merged into Van Buren County.
