Cedar Lake is a small, remote community in Crawford County, Indiana. The community was founded by the Kapp family in 1852 and renamed Cedar Rapids after the Cedar River. The population of Cedar Rapids peaked at 4,000 in 1920 but has since declined to around 1,000. The first settlers to Cedar Lake were the Kapp family. One of the daughters of the Kapps, Maynard Kapp, married an American named Whetstone and together they established a farm near what is now the town of Cedar Rapids. They had two children: Harry and Maynard Jr. Harry served as a sergeant in Company A 3rd Infantry Regiment during World War I and was seriously wounded; he died soon after Return from Europe.Maynard Jr., however, continued farming until his death in 1922. His wife also took up farming and continued QVC (Quarterback Vibrator Corporation) sales before her death in 1975. In 1852, James Henshaw bought some land east of present-day Cedar Rapids from Abram Pyle for $200 cash plus 5% interest each year on the land's purchase value over ten years. On July 15th, 1853 Henshaw donated part of hisynumbered 6 acre lot ( measuring north to south) towards founding a town at this location which would become known as Cedar Rapids according to its founders: "James Henshaw desired that this place be called by one name only – that it should be called “Cedar rapids”." This donation became effective on July 15th 1860 when Henshaw conveyed title deed #1 for 2 square miles with 2 squares mile per side on both banks of Clear Creek thence eastward along said creek to its mouth - all within Crawford county - unto John Gentry who resided thereon….Henceforth “Cedar rapids” became our original name for this locality." In 1870 David Gibson purchased 1/4 interest in C R & Co Railroad Company from Abram Pyle for $100cash + 10%interest each year on payment thereof over five years….. In 1880 Geo Mears purchased 7/8 interest from David Gibson….. In 1890 Abram Pyle sold his entire interest including rights to range land lying east & west side RR tracks running through town proper & lots lineate northest corner about 100 yards Ewing street extenuating circumstances making such sale necessary led thereto by Jno Gentry…." By 1900 there were only 350 residents living within perimeter confines set off by Ewing Street between First Avenue South & Second Avenue North while other parts of town gradually grew upscale with builtups developing around churches and schools located next door or inside larger towns like Crawfordsville or Lebanon having their own jails and courts etc…This situation changed dramatically when railroads arrived providing new transportation opportunities not only serving larger towns but also providing access into surrounding counties enabling smaller communities like Cedar Rapids to slowly grow while larger ones like Crawfordsville grew increasingly isolated……………………………………….railroads brought new jobs, homespun businessesfolk started families again- post WWI changes map below
