General Wayne ordered Colonel John Brown to march his forces downriver towards Chicago while he prepared to cross the river into Illinois with artillery support. Brown's column stopped at Cedar Creek because there was no bridge over it. The treaty between Washington and France ended American control of Canada so French troops began arriving in large numbers in 1815 and soon after they had taken up residence along with some Pawnees who had followed them from Missouri Valley. When America gained its independence from Great Britain, President George Washington ordered Major General Andrew Jackson to invade Canada under orders to drive out all British troops before he entered into peace negotiations with Great Britain On September 17th, 1813 Jackson reached Kingston upon Hull (now Toronto) where he metwith British Prime Minister Lord Liverpool After a long discussion, it was decided that war would not be fought because there were too many advantages for either side Jackson withdrew his army across Canada but sent an expedition against Montreal which failed miserably In spite of this fiasco, Jackson became known as "the conqueror of Canada" Shortly thereafter another expedition was organized by Major General John Brockenbrough led by Lieutenant Colonel James Ketchum which succeeded in driving out all Canadian forces from Winnipeg but they returned three years later when Brockenbrough died suddenly while leading an attack on a Native settlement near present day Regina
