Cedar Lake became an important transportation hub for the region, and its miles of canals made it one of the most prosperous communities in the area. In the 1920s, Cedar Lake experienced some serious economic decline as a result of World War I and II. However, over time the community regained some lost prosperity and Today Cedar Lake is an active local business community with strong ties to its surrounding rural communities.
Cedar Lake was a long and narrow body of water located in the eastern corner of Crawford County, Indiana. The name "Cedar Lake" comes from two sources: one is from a Shawnee word meaning "large cedar tree," and the other is from French meaning "a clear stream." Cedar creek was also named for this body of water. The first European to visit Cedar Lake was Jean Baptiste de Lacrosse on July 24, 1779. Lacrosse had accompanied Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dearborn's force that explored the area south of Fort Wayne during the French and Indian War. Heading north along the Whitewater River, he encountered what he thought were two small lakes but discovered instead an extensive body of water about seventy-five miles long by twenty miles wide at its widest point. Lacrosse named it Cedar Creek after one of his countrymen who lived near its mouth. In 1811, David Brown purchased land at Cedar Lake from Nicholas Butler for $1,000. In 1837, Wm Hays organized a wagon train which traveled down Cedar Creek to build a new fort at Miami (now Fort Wayne) on the opposite bank of Whitewater River. The fort was called Jacksonville and served as a trading post between Detroit and St. Joseph's parish in what is now Monroe County until 1861 when it was abandoned due to Union forces occupying Fort Harrison east of Indianapolis. It wasn't until 1870 that Reverend John Capps became pastor of First Presbyterian Church located on present day Washington Street in downtown Indianapolis when he started construction on his church tower which still stands today known as \"The Capps Tower\" after him and his wife Margaret (also known as \'Maggie\) Capps who founded Indianapolis' first florist shop located at 5th & Market Streets in 1888/89 before moving their business to 14th & Delaware Avenue in 1907 where they remain today with over 120 years history!
