Cedar Lake is a small community in Kent County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. The name Cedar Lake comes from the cedar trees that grow along its shores. Cedar Lake was platted in 1853 by General John Covington and named for him. The first settler in this area was James Hickey who arrived in 1825 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on what is now Cedar Creek Road near present-day I-465 and named it Hickey's Landing. This site is also the location where he sold his land to Isaac Pope in 1827 for $1,000 cash. In 1828, George Stephenson built a toll road from Georgetown to Crawfordsville as part of his construction project for the Indiana Central Railroad. Turtle Point Road was constructed parallel to Stephenson's toll road and became known as Cedar Point Road after Cedar Lake was reached by route 19th Street south of Georgetown on December 17, 1830. The original town plat included one mile (1 km) of beach frontage on both sides of Cedar Creek and consisted of twenty three buildings including a storehouse, post office and four cabins used by settlers during their stay here before they left to start new lives elsewhere The first school in this area was opened in 1835 by Mrs.[?] Whitehead with six students under her charge In 1840, Reverend Wm[?] Day set up a mission station at what is now Elmira Drive/Cedar Lane which served various religious denominations until 1850 when it burned down . In1848 David Denton purchased two hundred acres (80 ha) adjoining much later located at present day Elmira Drive/Cedar Lane from Reverend Wm[?] Day . At this time there were only five residences within sight of the lake but over time many more began moving into this area including: Dr[?], Mr[?,] Mrs[?], Rev[erable] Fisk,[?], [Mrs.] Dayton,[?] Mr[?,] Jno.[?,] Atherton,[?] Mathers Bros.[?], [Samuel P.] Butler Sr., Chas.[?]. David Denton quickly became well known throughout eastern Indiana for his extensive farming operations around Cedar Lakes and also developed an extensive shipping business importing agricultural products such as cornmeal, cheese, eggs and lumber

By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Cedar City and around 10% of the population consisted of Methodists. In 1861, a tornado struck Cedar City and destroyed much business property. A new courthouse was built and opened in 1865. In 1870, railroad tracks were laid through Cedar City and it became an important commercial center. By 1881, most residents had moved away or been forced out by economic factors such as gold discoveries in Kansas and Nebraska. But during World War I (1914-18), many local farmers enlisted in the military and produced food for troops stationed overseas; this helped revive growth at later times when rapid population growth occurred after World War II (1945-present).
Cedar Lake was first settled in 1824 by George Armstrong Custer. The community was named after Cedar Creek which flows through the town. Cedar Lake became a census-designated place in 1961 and a city in 2002.
