Cedar Lake was one of the earliest settlements in what is now Indiana. The water that forms Cedar Lake was known to be drinkable by the first Europeans who visited the area. However, some of those who remained moved their families to Cedar Lake and started new businesses such as tanning hides and making paper products. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson signed an act creating Mount Carmel Township which included present-day Cedar Lake. The township was named for Mount Carmel in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania where many of the early settlers had lived. The first deeds were sold within two months of its establishment and construction began on what is now the village of Cedar Lake itself. The first store opened up in April 1837 and soon became one of the most important businesses in town. Many local residents served as trustees or directors for various local institutions such as schools, churches and a post office until they retired at age 70 or older after serving their country honorably during World War II or later when they could no longer physically perform those tasks due to health concerns (Walsh). The land that makes up present day Cedar Lake was originally part of Delaware Township which was established in 1839 (Snyder). When Delaware Township changed its name to Mount Carmel Township in 1936, it reverted back to its prior name for Huron County - Delaware Township (Kellerhoffer et al.). In 1984, changes were made to Mount Carmel Township which included adding portions of present day Burlington County including parts of eastern Willowbrook Village adjacent to CedarLake (Foley). As a result, today’s village covers 8 square miles with over 2 thousand residents who all live close together on large plots providing infrastructure like water services, baseball diamonds/fields/courses etc.. Today’s history can be best experienced through exploring different aspects such as culture or architecture while also taking an overview into events that have taken place throughout town’s history such as funerals held at Maple Lawn Cemetery or Fourth Of July fireworks displays at Indian Hill Park; both located just outside town limits on beautiful streets lined with weeping willows!
