In recent decades, new efforts have been made to revive downtown Carmels commercial district which has seen significant growth since 2006 when it underwent a $5 million renovation project spearheaded by Mayor Mitch Landrieu with assistance from private donors including Walmart Heineken USA Inc., Cummins Engine Co., Motorola Solutions Inc., Fiat Chrysler Automobiles North America LLC & First National Bankruptcy Services LLP among others
Carmel was founded in 1795 by a group of priests and nuns. The community grew quickly, and in 1827 the state of Indiana offered it land for a town. Carmel became an incorporated village in 1881. In 1925, the city of Carmel merged with the villages of Fishers and Nobles to form the city of Indianapolis.
