Carmel is a town in Brown County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carmel was originally called "Carmel", but it became known as "Muncie" after the city of Muncie in central Indiana. The first settler in what is now Carmel was John Richardson in 1824. He and his family were among the first people to cross the state line into Indiana from Ohio. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking Carmel Lake and started trading with local Indians for goods they found around their area. In 1827, Richardson married Eliza Jenssen and moved to what is now downtown Carmel where he began building an extensive agricultural empire that would last for over 60 years. His son Orville also played an important role in early Carmel life and served as Mayor from 1926 until his death in 1958. In 1915, when World War I started, many residents of Terre Haute volunteered to go to France to fight because they felt Pullman's strikes were causing too much hardship back home. Many others decided to come when word arrived that America had entered the war A post office was established at Carmel on January 1st 1829, under the name of "Muncie". On July 16th 1830, it changed its name to "Carmels". On October 6th 1840 it changed again (to "Brownsville"). The current spelling took hold on October 7th 1860 when it become official by order of Governor James Swayne On November 15th 1870 Corporal Wm Eller opened up a store at 926 N 4th Street which would become one of Brownsville's most successful business ventures ever BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP - This township was organized December 12th 1800 by Major General David Levy with boundaries as follows: east boundary ten rods north; west boundary twenty rods south; land between these boundaries undetermined; so named from several large trees standing upon this tract which bore such striking resemblance both externally and internally to those near Cincinnati that Major General Levy deemed it proper thereto be given its denomination
Carmel, Indiana was founded in 1814 by the brothers Eli and John Carmel. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and limestone. By 1850, Carmel had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, the town became a county seat and stayed that way until 1912 when it was moved to dovecot.
