Carmel is a small town in Vermillion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Carmel is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered to the north by Lakin and to the east by Westville. It has a total area of 2 square miles (6 km²). The first residents of Carmel were French Canadians who had arrived in 1832 from Quebec City. The first post office in Carmel was established in 1836. The name of the town was changed to Carmel in 1843 because it had been recommended by General John Pemberton as being an attractive place for settlers due to its natural resources and easy access to water. In 1865, a sawmill was built on the south side of Main Street and became one of the largest mills in Indiana. In 1903, Eastern Cottonseed Company bought out the mill owner, closed it down, and moved its operations to Findlay, Ohio where they remained until 1973 when they merged with Dow Chemical Company to become Eastern Dow Chemical Co., Inc. From 1916-1918 World War Isaw production at Eastern Dow's Muncie Works rise from 350 tons per day (tpd) to 10,000 tpd due largely to advances made by then- laughed engineer C E Sprague Jr.. On September 3rd 1918 while working on repairs after an engine failure that left their main line open for many hours Carmel's citizens raised $1 million hand over fist through various events such as dances and parades throughout their city limits which culminated with a dinner honoring President Wilson that evening at local restaurant Karnack’s Garden

In the 1920s, Carmel experienced another period of growth, driven by its status as a munitions production center during World War II. The city's population reached 100,000 in the 1940s and 50,000 in the 1950s; however, it declined rapidly thereafter until reaching 25,000 in 1971. Since then, Carmel has slowly regained some of its lost wealth and stability. The city is now home to about 30,000 people.
