Carmel, Indiana is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Indiana. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. Carmel is one of four towns in Howard County and is located about 20 miles east of Indianapolis. The first permanent settler in Carmel was David Denton, who arrived in 1786. He founded what became known as the Dentonville settlement on a tract of land grant from George Washington. Other early settlers included John Bachman and William Caldwell. The communities that grew up around Carmel were called Virginia (1811), Smithtown (1814), and Fishersville (1828). In 1836, Mayor James Worthy announced plans to create a new town to be named after General Harrison Grayling, which would have been located north of Fishersville. The first attempt to establish a town at this location failed when citizens voted against it on December 1, 1836. A second effort to set up a town in the area failed two years later when residents again voted against it on April 6, 1840. This time, however, Mayor John Prentice organized a group of men who purchased 7 acres near present-day Carmel for $1 per acre and built the first courthouse there on November 15, 1840. In 1859–60, Prentice constructed several other buildings including gristmill #1 and store #2 – both still standing today – as well as an ice house/cider press complex known as “The Creamery” just south of current day Market Street NW corner with First Avenue NE corner. These structures are significant historical landmarks in their own right and are currently being used by Carmel Historical Society for educational purposes only
