Carmel is a city in and the county seat of Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 90,577 at the 2010 census. Carmel is one of the largest cities in central Indiana. It lies on both sides of the Wabash River, just south of downtown Indianapolis. The first European settler to arrive in what is now Carmel were two Dutchmen, Hendrick van der Borgh and Abraham Ortlieb, who arrived in 1690. They named their new settlement "Carmel" after a place in Flanders where they had been born. The Van der Borghs built a log cabin on current Park Road near Old College Cemetery before moving to their more permanent home near Fifth Street and Nifty Drive in 1701. In 1802,actress Marie Bashford founded an academy here which became known as "The Mount Carmel Academy". She gave it for instruction only to women but nearby men also attended from then on; this was unusual at the time because girls were not generally allowed to receive education outside the home until well into adulthood. After her death in 1868, most of the male students left or were expelled from the school while most female students continued being taught by Mrs. Bashford's successors including Miss Jane Addams (1870-1935). Most of present day Carmel was laid out as part of a land grant given by James Kapp around 1800–18006 to his brother-in-law Nicholas Ballou (1762-1838). When ballou died without children he bequeathed part of his estate - mostly farmland east and north of McCormick Road - to his wife Rebecca Ballou (1775-1851), daughterof Nicholas Ballou’s older sister Mary Warner (died 1792). Rebecca leased that land back to John Hoadley (one half brotherof Nicholas Ballou) for £50 per year beginning 1 May 1800 until 12 October 1840 when it reverted back to Hoadley upon Rebecca’s death intestate with power over any future heirs apparent notwithstanding claims by her son John Hoadley IIIqv Although much smaller than today's cityscape due largely to its location within agricultural regions throughout its early years Carmel grew rapidly thanks primarily to two factors: First its strategic location midway between Indianapolis and Louisville/Jeffersonville – convenient transportation links made it an important center for trade during times when those cities were growing rapidly; second Henry Clay's Notes on Indian Affairs ceded portions along what is now I-465 corridor providing easy access for commodity crops such as cornstarch and beans
