Carmel is a town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carmel County. The name "Carmel" comes from the Spanish word "carmelo," meaning "apple." The first permanent European settler in what is now Carmel was Pierre Chouteau, who landed there on November 28, 1795. In 1801, the site became part of Township No. 2 due to its strategic location between two forks of the Wabash River and its close proximity to Logansport and Decatur. A post office called Carmel dates back to 1826, but it was discontinued in 1892 because it had been serving both Logansport and Decatur. In 1853, a group of men led by Elijah Price founded Price's Station on the Wabash River opposite modern day Knoxville. From this point forward until 1964, Carmel remained an agricultural community with small-scale livestock operations providing most economic activity. However, during that time period some significant changes occurred in the area that have had lasting impacts on Carmel today: In 1984, local businessman Marvin Pasternak donated land adjacent to his home on South Main Street for use as a park named after him – Pasternak Park Today – which remains one of the town's primary tourist attractions today. This event helped ignite a new era for Carmel as an artsy enclave with interest in outdoor activities growing steadily throughout the 1990s; however much further development has yet to occur despite this investment although many new amenities have been built over time including several nightmarish hotels dotting downtown’s skyline (the latest addition being Trump International Hotel & Tower). These days though much enthusiasm exists for entrepreneurship and creative expression within our midst while also enjoying several fine restaurants some dating back more than 50 years! Today's economy owes much to advances made by education; particularly through Purdue University which has played an increasingly important role in creating job opportunities throughout central Indiana since opening its main campus here nearly 40 years ago – making Purdue one of India's top employers! As we enter into another decade or so where jobs are available throughout healthcare research institutions such as IU School of Medicine would be hard pressed not to see continued growth potential attributable largely to Indiana State University’s expanding medical center complex just south of town on I-465/I-70 east side - opening only 6 months ago!
