Polk as an agricultural center on the remains of an earlier Native American village. The first people to live in Carmel were the Potawatomi Indians who lived along the banks of the White River for more than two centuries before becoming extinct around 1850. The earliest Europeans to visit Carmel were French traders from Quebec who settled there in 1765-67. A group of Englishmen from London came to trade with the Potawatomi in 1795. They named their new settlement after Admiral John Hawkins (1745-1803) who had helped repulse Spanish forces at Vera Cruz during the War for Independence, which ended with Spain's defeat at Bunker Hill on July 4, 1776. In 1824, when Lieutenant Governor James K. Polk became governor of Indiana following his election as president that year, he decided to establish a new Agricultural Department within his agency and established Carmel as its headquarters. The development of agriculture led to increased trade and commerce between Indiana and Canada; this made Carmel important both politically and economically throughout much of the 19th century. By 1860, however, cotton had become India's most important cash crop; so much traffic passed through Carmel that it became known as "the Cotton Capital of America." As cotton prices plummeted during World War II due to wartime rationing, industry collapsed around 1945; but organic farming began arriving in Carmel beginning in earnest shortly thereafter; today it makes up nearly 60% of all businesses in town – including many large retailers such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Weldon Green Mall – employing more than 1,500 people directly or indirectly according to2016 Census data . Today there are several functioning cultural institutions located within or near Carmel: Big Red House Museum (founded 1949), IUPUI campus' Fine Arts Center (established 1978), First United Methodist Church (established 1895), Presbyterian Church (United Reformed) (founded 1865), Holy Cross Catholic Church (founded 1928), Sangamon Valley Historical Society Museum Annex (opened 1985), Carbondale Playground (opened 1969) – among others .

Carmel, Indiana is a small town located in the southeast corner of Indiana. The community was founded in 1814 by George Carmel and his wife Esther. The population of Carmel decreased until it peaked at around 30 residents in the early 1920s. However, the population has slowly declined since then and currently resides around 12 residents. The history of Carmel begins with George Carmel. He was born in 1792 in what is now Burlington County, New Jersey and moved to what is now Carmel County, Indiana when he was just 10 years old. After moving to this area, he started a sawmill and later purchased land for a grist mill. In 1814, he married Esther and began building a home hereon which would become known as the “Old Home Place” today. The couple had two children- both died young however- leaving George to continue running the business alone until his death in 1881. Although there are many stories about George Carmel, one that stands out is his role in helping start Indianapolis’ first paper mill back in 1829. This event helped spur economic development within the city and led to an increase in population growth throughout the 1840s and 1850s! Unfortunately, due to competition from other mills on the scene (most notably John Pemberton’s), Indianapolis eventually lost its paper industry during this time period- though not before establishing itself as one of America’s leading cities! In spite of its lack of success during this time period (and eventual decline), Carmel managed to maintain some level of stability over the years despite having very little physical infrastructure aside from three homes! This included considerable progress made within education; through Rush University being established herein Landmarks indicate prior brick schoolhouses were constructed along SR 522 between 1830 & 1840 These buildings collectively housed grades 7 – 12 students until 1944 when they were replaced by present day Community High School !!! Today we still enjoy great access to our public education system thanks primarily to Rush University !!!
Carmel, Indiana was founded in 1814 by the wreck of a ship called the "Tribune." The town was named after General James K. Polk, who had been president at the time of the wreck.
