In 1830s Lafayette College opened its doors here as a Baptist schoolaffiliated with Methodism; but it closed around 1840 due to financial difficulties caused by Mexican Uprising debts mounted by students trying to flee Mexico City during that period of instability there. When statehood was granted to Indiana on December 4th, 1846 – more than two years after Mexico's collapse – Carmelo became one of its first townships; but it had no incorporation until January 3rd of 1850 when citizens meeting at Garnet Chapel (now First United Methodist Church) petitioned for charter under then-Mayor Arent Peebles’ leadership because they felt their township should have all rights “similar unto those enjoyed by other townships within our boundaries” which were “fully organized according to law” A group led by Captain Wm Hays platted what would become Carmel on April 14th 1850 and named it for Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception de la Candela (later Our Lady Of Peace), who reputedly visited this area frequently while living nearby at Carrera Monastery late in her life following her miraculous cure from smallpox contracted while traveling through Mexico City on November 24th., 1847 – days before Mexican Independence from Spain was celebrated nationwide – thus fulfilling prophesy about "a Marian town" being established soon following such event . In 1865–66 local banker Elijah Parks developed land southeast of town along State Road 9 between what are now US 6W and 2nd Street towards Noblesville into Orchard Park where he built several large homes still standing today including Mission House which served as both a Masonic temple and library before being abandoned in 1968; also notable are Green Gables homebuilt ca 1860-1862 atop an early 20th century log barn located on parkland adjacent now occupied by Stroudsburg High School; also visible are several early 20th century limestone storefronts or warehouses located along SR 9B just northeast of town center dating back to when this corridor served primarily agricultural purposes becoming important transportation routes connecting rural areas with downtown during latter half of 19th century As widespread railroad construction moved inland throughout much central Indiana starting around 1870 most residents began commuting daily or weekly commute out into larger cities like Indianapolis so new business started up around factories along newly developing industrial corridors creating burgeoning commercial districts interspersed throughout older villages becoming increasingly specialized with these suburban centers emerging gradually leading communities spread evenly across wide open space characterized initially largely geographically via rolling hills typical since historical times feature prominently high density values associated with highly productive farmland irrigated agriculture major cultural attractions typically neighboring urban centers
