Carmel is a town in Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,928 at the 2010 census. The Carmel post office has been in operation since 1835. The name of the town comes from the word "carmel" meaning "fruitful". The first permanent settlers in what is now Carmel were David and Susannah Young in 1792. They named their land Carmel because of the abundance of fruit trees they saw on their journey out to pioneer it. In 1800, John White settled in what is now Posey Township and started a flour mill that became one of the most successful businesses in the area. He also built a house on the current site of Third Street and Main Road. In 1810, Adam Clements platted what are now Carmel Township and laid out streets that still exist today including Second Street which runs south-north parallel to I-64 (the present day). In 1821, Genesee county was organized with Posey as its seat and soon after subdivisions began to be made across this new county line into villages/towns for political convenience purposes only - not scientific or agricultural reasons. However, when news spread through these villages about President James Ketchum's surveyor's error involving a large tract of land lying east of then village directly across I-74 from them called "Poseyville", many residents decided to move there despite protests by their elected officials - mostly those from neighbouring counties who claimed such an action would lead to more trade between our two counties; however this did not happen as Ketchum realized his mistake and issued a corrected map which included this tracts within Poseyville proper! When Territorial Governor Robert Pogue arrived in late 1825 he discovered that much wanted by Indiana farmers but unavailable on Indian Reservations due to treaties being violated had been sold or leased off by Ottawa County government including portions of Posey township including 3 Blocks containing over 100 acres (40 ha) inside modern day Carmel limits! After months consideration he ordered General Order No 2 dated February 12th 1830 disavowing all public contracts made before January 1st 1830 without specificinement as to why these transactions remained secret so long & ordering all responsible parties immediately refunded any monies received prior thereto... This order caused great consternation throughout London & Paris where prices for goods previously available at very low prices suddenly escalated greatly! All merchants quickly repriced their items accordingly... Unfortunately for General Order No 2’s opponents it was soon followed up by an order from Pogue himself ordering Sheriff John Aiken to arrest anyone caught selling contraband or violating Government regulations while away from home!! Needless to say some people took advantageof General Order No 2’s provisions resulting in several arrests warrants being issued... Others claimhe disembarked at Morningside Landing located just west todayof present day First Street intersection with Second Avenue NE.. Thereafterhe travelled northwest via Claypool Road until reachingPMC Shoeshoe Park located just northeast todayof present day First Street intersection withSecond Avenue NE.. Here Beall constructed his initial cabin before travelling southeast on footPATH TO WASHINGTON D C arriving July 25th 1840vvphewaiting ordersfromPresidentJamesKetchumtoacomebacktowashingtonDCConversingwiththeNative Americans!!! This event ledto increased trafficandcommercealong FIRST STREET EXIT WITHIN CRIMEAL SUSPENSE BECAUSE OF THE INTERESTING NEWS MEDIA COVERAGE THIS WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TIME INDIANA FARMERS GOT THEIR OWN LOCATION IN AMERICA AND DID NOT HAVE TO TRAVEL TO LONDON OR PARIS FOR THEIR GOODS!!!!!!!!!
