Carmel is a small town in central Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1814 by the brothers Elijah and Enoch Carmel. The Carmels were natives of Galilee, located near Jerusalem. In 1818, they moved to this area and started a log-and-frame factory. The company prospered until the early 1800s, when it went into decline due to competition from cheaper forms of manufacture. In 1850, Elijah Carmel sold his share of the business to his brother John; John ran it as a partnership with his son Jacob for many years. The family name passed away in 1925, but the business continued until 2007 as Carmel Manufacturing Company. The town was platted on December 12, 1814, by brothers Elijah and Enoch Carmel after trading posts were established there by Indian traders known as the Pottawatomies (now Shawnee). When Indiana became a state in 1815, the Pottawatomies ceded their lands to the new state; however, no one ever built a road or settlers arrived until Elijah and Enoch decided to move here because of its strategic location at an intersection of two wagon trails leading from Londontown in Ohio Territory to Fort Wayne on Lake Michigan. Founded on high ground overlooking both Lake Michigan and Black Diamond Hill just outside what is now downtown Carmel (now part of Westfield), Carmel grew rapidly during its early years thanks largely to its citizens' investment in logging enterprises which produced sawyers' tools needed for construction work around town as well as other production needs like flour and candles. Logging ceased operations in 1907 due primarily to overgrazing – though some logs still remain today – leaving behind not only an impressive natural fortress against raiding parties but also evidence that human ingenuity could create even great things when faced with adversity. In 1850–51 Jacob ran unsuccessfully for Congress on a Whig ticket against incumbent Daniel Webster; he later served as treasurer for Hamilton County before returning to business ownership full time with his father’s help starting up another paper mill nearby called Methodist Mills (later First National Paper Co.) Thereafter little industry developed west of Indianapolis so much so that by 1907 only four men worked at First National Paper & Cable Co., one man working out of old Methodist Mills building wire rope connections across local creeks! By 1920 about 60% of all textiles made here were handwoven using looms typical found throughout most northeastern United States including Pennsylvania “up through” Social Security checks day laborer status had ended… By 1930 less than 5% percent either finished product or used machines! By 1940 less than 1% percent Finished product or used machines! Most jobs closed down due World War II resulting almost all textile mills being converted into Ford plants!! Only Glen Burnie got back started making textiles again after hard times!! Even then most products are made overseas these days!!! That era is coming soon enough too…..
The town of Carmel, Indiana was founded in 1824 by John H. Carmel and his wife Esther. The town was named after the Carmelites, a religious group who provided funding for the settlement. The first settler in Carmel was Isaac White. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of 350 people. By 1840, the population had increased to 1,000 people. In 1854, the territory that now includes part of Indianapolis were annexed by Carmel, and the name change to Indianapolis Colts.
