Carmel, Indiana is a small town located in the state ofIndiana. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Carmel is one of four towns in Vigo County. The others are Goshen, Joplin and Peru. The history of Carmel goes back to 1824 when it was known as "New Harmony." In 1829, the community moved from New Harmony to what is now Vigo County because of difficulties with getting transportation to market. The first post office in Carmel opened in 1830. Carmel has a rich history dating back to its early days as a trading post on the Ohio River. When traffic grew too cumbersomely to make the trip downriver each day, traders set up shop along Route 6 in present-day Carmel. By 1840, trade had dwindled so much that New Harmony petitioned Congress for funds to build an across-the-river road linking Cincinnati and Indianapolis so settlers could get goods and goods prices down below cost on the open market; this request was granted and New Harmony became an incorporated village in 1844. During World War II, many local residents volunteered their time and resources for service – including manufacturing munitions – within their communities by working at various munitions plants throughout Indiana and Kentucky where they were paid heavily (relative to average professional wages) for their efforts by companies that needed workers during those difficult times. In 1951, after years of negotiation between Mayor John Tompkins (D), then Town Clerk Gayle Weems (R), then State Senator Tom Harkin (D), representatives from all over central Indiana gathered at Logansport for what would become known as “The Big Meeting” which determined changes needed for demographics & government operations affecting our three rural towns: Carmel/Vigo County; Goshen/Joplin Counties; Lima/Erie Counties surrounding us:resulting into county seat move from Logansport(now Noblesville)to Carmel effective January 1st 1952! For more than 50 years since then we have been proud members of both sides of politics!

Carmel is a small community in southern Indiana, located about 25 miles east of Indianapolis. It was founded by the Carmelites in 1828 as a conventicle for girls who had been taken from the religiously-motivated violence and deprivation of the French and Indian Wars. The convent was later moved to its present site on Main Street, near Carmel's main square, in 1856. In 1907, after years of growth and development spurred by World War Ihey annexed nearby Peebles.
Carmel was founded by the Carmelites in 1814. The community is named for St. John of the Cross, who died in 1553. The Carmelite monks first settled in what is now Carmel, Indiana, in 1796.
