During World War II many local businesses took part in production for munitions plants throughout Indiana including Armour Aircraft Company which made B-17s nicknamed "Carmels" and "Pensacolas". After 1945 many businesses closed down or were acquired by larger companies and most people transitioned into other careers such as sales or service jobs during this time period; however some continue to live here through descendants or relocation from outlying areas such as West Lafayette or Terre Haute IN
