Brownsburg is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Potawatomie word "bruno" meaning brown and "sburg" meaning place. Brownsburg first appeared on maps in 1814. It was originally named for John Brown, an American Revolutionary War general and founder of the Republic of Texas. In 1827, Brownsburg changed its name to Bentonville after General William Benton who had fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as commissioner of Indian Affairs under President James K. Polk. Brownsburg was platted in 1814 by Nicholas Jancey as part of a larger area drained by the Wabash River called East Prairie (now known as Fort Wayne). The town was Named for John Brown who donated land to bequeathed to it by his father-in-law Moses Lyon Jr.. According to one account, when both men were presented with a map of their new community they each said "This will be my resting place." Brownstown (now Westville) was founded about two miles east of Brownsburg in 1840 by settlers brought overland from Illinois by wagon train led by Colonel John Capps. In 1860, Brownsburg became one of ten towns incorporated into Hendricks County along with Terre Haute and New Albany. Highway 20 ran through downtown until it was extended eastward in 1938 as part of I-465 which connected Indianapolis with Chicago via Bloomington and Evanston. The old courthouse burned down on October 12th 1865 during a fight between local militiamen and Native Americans near what is now known as State Road 519 south of town limits. A new courthouse was built on Holmes Road northeast of town limits then completed in 1886 using funds raised from sale of public lands withintown Limits including that around present day State Road 519 where most early economic activity took place such as saw mills operated outbuildings adjacent to Holmes Rd./State Rd.] In 1907, an important event happened when Congressman George Norris became speaker pro tempore after leaving Congress to become US Ambassador to Russia On October 3rd 1907 while he attended a meeting at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant located on current day State Route 26 northwest sideof town limits something went wrong hydraulically causing some massive flooding which destroyed many homes including those located on current day Holmes Rd/State Route 26A prompting Norris immediately dispatched three brigades consisting mostly Iowa National Guard troops under Major General Floyd Eisner [ later Governor George Romney ]to help assess damage& provide relief orderedby Congressional Speaker Samuel Morse who noted that this typeof emergency response could only come fromGen Longstreet’s Division Commander Rear Admiral Tugwell] At that time there were no national guard troops stationed outside city limits & all volunteer fire departments responded . . .[On November 2nd 1907] Mayor Haskins organized four citizens groups - Farmers League/Organizing Committee; Business Men's Association; women's group; Negroes' Protective League -and requested assistance from Gen Longstreet’s Division Commander Rear Admiral Tugwell with providing searchlights & other equipment needed for night operations [the following year Dunbar High School opened up shop just west sideof Holmes Rd.] The post office at Brownsburgh closed on December 15th 1914 because mail volume had decreased so much due to World War One.[It reopened on February 14th 1915] During World War Two postal service increased but stopped again because Postal Service didn't have enough money budgeted for it

Brownsburg is a city in Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,726 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Brownsburg was Nicholas Weiser in 1814. By 1825 there were nine families living in Brownsburg. In 1830, George Ritchie set out from Brownsburg with his family and arrived at what is now Delaware Avenue and Keystone Road. The town began as a small farming community with only three houses and five acres (2 ha) of land. In 1832, John Stephenson erected a sawmill on the current site of the Indiana State Fairgrounds and built four other businesses including one store, two churches, and a blacksmith shop. By 1840, Brownstown had ten residents and six stores. A school was established that year by Reverend Elijah Whitefield to serve students from nearby towns such as Newark and Clarksburg; it became known as "The little schoolhouse" because its size limited its enrollment to about 60 pupils per day). In 1846, Anthony Morse opened his own grocery store on Delaware Avenue; it became an anchor for the local economy until 1906 when Proctor's Drug Store replaced it on Pennsylvania Street across from the fairgrounds. That year also saw the founding of a post office which functioned continuously until 1907 when mail was diverted to Indianapolis due to construction projects within the city limits! In 1861, Mrs Anna Jorgensen merited her own article in "Weekly Journal" for her baking skills (she operated ovens at her home until 1936). During World War I (1915-1918), Brownsburg produced 582 military personnel who servedin various branches of service including artillery batteries (#1st Infantry regiment), machine guns (6th Artillery battalion), nurses (1st Ambulance Corps detachment #4), truck drivers (#5th Cavalry division Headquarters unit), postal clerks (#3rd class) and many others! The following year saw mass production of T-barrel shotguns by Fenton Manufacturing Company beginning in late 1915; these shotguns would be used throughout World War II by both American forces and Japanese troops alike! On October 1st 1908 – just over 50 years ago – Brownsburg incorporated into Howard County under charter number 827 from Mayor Wm Ladd & Cllr Hiram Pohlman Jr.. This date marks not only the incorporation but also passage through some very trying times during those early years characterized by lack of education opportunities for most citizens&hellip….
