Brownsburg is a city in central Indiana, United States. The population was 41,433 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The town has been named for General George Brown and his troops during the American Civil War. The first permanent settler in what is now Brownsburg was Captain James A. Caldwell of Kentucky in 1814. He built a log cabin on land he had purchased from the Shawnee Indians near present-day Greenwood Village. In 1816, Major John Cranch surveyed and laid out a town site on the east side of the Wabash River opposite today's downtown Evansville. That same year, Caldwell's son James A., also known as "Old James" to locals, became one of early Brownsburg residents when he moved from Louisville with his family to start a fur trading business hereabouts. On December 12th, 1816, General William Henry Harrison led an army into Rohmstown Township to battle against Native Americans and drove them from their land; this event helped spur settlers to move into present-day Brownsburg and nearby Clearfield Township (now Burlington County) over the next few years. In 1821, Colonel David Senter erected a small frame courthouse in what is now downtown Brownsburg just south of where US Highway 35 crosses Wabash River near today's Greenwood Village shopping center - this building served as general court house and law office until it burned down in 1865 while being used as a barracks by Confederate forces duringthe American Civil War (1863-1865). On October 15th, 1829 – two weeks after General David Senter lost his life at Battle of Fallen Timbers – Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated President of the United States at Liberty Hall in Indianapolis; that day local citizens gathered around Old James Caldwell's log cabin to watch proceedings from inside its ramparts which overlooked Old Fort Harrison on Wabash River acrossriver frompresent-day Downtown Evansville - this location later became known as Presidential Park! In 1830s & 1840s various stages were played out here including: cattle raising (Dutch Bros.), furniture making (& tanning), lead mining (Cordova Mines), railroads coming thru town (Brownsburg Railroad), stores & restaurants opening up along wagons trails running thrutown (~ 1850s), some 1st class schools like davenport High School open ~ 1860s/70s etc., post office established 1862 with 2 mail carts serviceable daily (~ 1870s), many businesses closed around 1920 due lack of customers or competition from other towns withinEvansville area; however major movie theater opened up in Evansville circa 1925!
