The city saw rapid growth until World War II when it suffered significant damage from bombing raids by Japan. Afterward, Brownstown annexed parts of Brownsburg until its population reached 4,000 residents in 1960. From then until 2000, Brownstown remained as its own independent municipality with its own government and school system that continues to this day. In 2006, however, due to growing competition from other municipalities within Putnam County for tax dollars and development projects, Brownstown decided to merge with neighboring Greenfield to form a new municipality called Greenfield-Brownsburg which had a population of 5,752 as of 2009

Brownsburg is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Brownsburg was made on the banks of the White River by French colonists in 1788. The name "Brownsburg" comes from James Brown and his family who settled there in 1806. The first school in Brownburg was built on a hill near present day Main Street and North Avenue in 1814. In 1832, a gristmill which later became a sawmill was built on Third Street east of downtown. A post office called Brownsburg was established in 1835, and remained so until it was discontinued in 1907. The first churches were built here around this time: First Baptist Church (1836), Second Baptist Church (1841), and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (1846). After being burned down several times during the 1840s and 1850s, one version of the story has it that an angel visiting God sent down fire to destroy any remaining churches while they were being constructed – this finally happened when Union forces destroyed them during their occupation of Brownsburg during the American Civil War. In 1865, Brownsburg became part of Evansville when that city absorbed all but two of Harrison County's townships. As part of this process, much older parts of town such as Main Street were torn down to make way for new development; however, some old buildings remain today including Oneonta High School which opened here in 1969 as one of only two high schools within Evanston Township limits at that time. As business boomed throughout Evansville during the late 1800s and early 1900s, many people moved into what would become Brownsburg; these families founded businesses such as grocery stores (later renamed Kroger), hardware stores (later renamed Home Depot), car dealerships/trucks dealership chains (such as Ford & GMC Truck Centers), restaurants/cafes/bars (such as Peet's Coffee & Tea Company and Noodle Bowl fame–the latter becoming known for its chili dogs with nacho cheese sauce served inside out dog bowls) – even creating their own ZIP code outside of Indianapolis! Many residents also continued to live here through World War II due to various factors such as agriculture providing employment opportunities throughout that conflict-torn era or simply because they could not find other places to live closer to friends or family members back home – an often difficult decision given wartime conditions across America specifically affecting rural areas like those found near Brownsburg! Today’s community Jayhawk mall located just off I-465 service area offers shopping options unique to Indianpolisians such as Bloomingdale’s Department Store and Sears among others while also serving up great food options including Sonic Drive-In which reopened after years closed due to lack investment by previous owners numerous times over! This brings me back again to my original point about how living closeto friends or family members can be difficult when circumstances demand otherwise… but ultimately it’s something we take for granted because we have so much love & support system behind us!
