Brownsburg is a small town in the US state of Indiana. It is located in Scott Township, and was founded in 1815. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,390. The name "Brownsburg" is derived from the Potawatomi word "bruhtrunk," meaning "settlement." The first settler to arrive in what is now Brownsburg was John Marshall, who came with his family on July 4, 1815. The town Drug Store and Post Office were built in 1816 by Alexander Duffield and are still standing today. In 1830, James Giddings established a tannery here. This tannery continued operation until 1922 when it closed due to bad weather conditions. In 1840, Samuel Fenton opened a store here that became one of the most popular locations for retail businesses in the community. Eventually other stores followed suit including the Harry Houdt store that operated from 1948-1957 and later became known as Houdt's Department Store. On October 3rd of that year, Brownsburg attained its current form when a post office called Kincaid was erected at the intersection of 2nd Street and Main Street. Brownsburg is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. Brownsburg was platted in 1827 and became a village in 1867. The first post office opened in Brownsburg on March 6, 1827, and remained open until it was discontinued on October 15, 1928. Brownsburg was named for Major General John A. Brown (1786-1863), an officer during the War of 1812 who fought against Native Americans and served as commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican–American War. The town site came to be largely populated by Germans from Bavaria who settled there in the early 1800s; many of these people are buried in the nearby Lutheran Cemetery that dates back to 1840. The original name for Brownsburg--"Highland," after Chief Justice James Highsmith had earlier noted that "the rock high up upon which our village stands hath its aboriginal appellation Highland")--was changed to "Brownsburg" due to objections from other German-speaking settlements within Johnson County where "Hamburger" (a word meaning bacon) would have been more appropriate names than "Brownsburg." In 1865, when Union soldiers burned down several homes in neighboring Decatur Township while occupying Bloomington, Brownsburg businesses quickly rebuilt with local materials and began using their new name rather than "Decatur Township." The first post office at Brownsburg reopened on March 6, 1827; it operated under the name of Greencastle until January 2, 1830 when it changed its name to Brownsburg and continued serving as such until October 15, 1928 when it closed due to lack of mail service. At present day, both federal law enforcement agencies based out of Indianapolis use Brownsburg as their primary headquarters; however local government functions including zoning decisions and Streets & Trails programming are still conducted out of town via various committees meetings held monthly or more often if necessary depending on community needs/opportunities/.
