Brownsburg is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the Ohio River between Louisville and Frankfort. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Brownsburg was Nicholas Jantz in 1814. Jantz and his family built a log cabin on top of a hill near present-day Elmwood Cemetery and set about farming their land until 1825 when they moved to what is now Elmwood Park Boulevard east of Main Street. In 1830, James Whitaker erected an early frame house on the current site of First Baptist Church which he renamed Whitaker's House after himself - one of many such pioneer homes in this area during the 1800s. In 1834, John Pogue founded Pogue's Tavern on East Main Street, which became one of Brownsburg's most popular attractions for tavern culture and gambling until it closed its doors in 1907 due to prohibitionism only two years after its inception. Other early businesses include Wagon Wheel Emporium (now defunct), Post Office (1835), Gadsden Livery stable (1850), and Livery stable No 2 (1860). One notable resident from Brownsburg during this time was Elisha Kilgore who served as mayor from 1876 to 1886; he also helped found The Literary & Philosophical Society in 1875 and served as its first president. A number of local businessmen were instrumental in developing Brownsburg into one of rural Indiana's leading cities by 1900 including H R Donnelley Sr., who organized The Indianapolis Journal paper company; Edwin Trumpington Swenzer, an entrepreneur who founded several banks including TheIndiana National Bank; banker C F Greenleaf Jr.; insurance salesman Clarence S Wallace; Clarence Vail; grocer Julius Kappelman; W M Owen & Sons grocery storekeepers/ grocers
The Brownsburg, Indiana area was first settled in 1813 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town was named for Major John Brown, an American officer who fought in the War of 1812. Brownsburg became a small community with only about 100 residents in 1830. By 1860, the population had grown to 3200 and by 1920 it had reached 7500. Brownsburg is home to the first high school in Indiana and also hosts many events related to its history, such as the annual Brownsburg History Festival.
