Brownsburg was founded in 1814 by General James K. Polk and his army as Fort Knox after they retreated from what is now Kentucky during the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Brownsburg was established on April 1, 1821. In 1830, a schoolhouse and log cabin were built on the site of present day Brown University; it served as a public school until 1865 when it became a college institute under President Abraham Lincoln. In 1881, Brown University moved to its current location on State Street between Washington and Elm Streets. The city's economy revolves around agriculture, manufacturing and service industries such as education, health care and government services. Manufacturing makes up over 60% of Brownsburg's employment while services make up only 10%. The city contains three shopping malls which are home to five major retailers: Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), JCPenney Store (JCPenney), Macy's Inc., Neiman Marcus Group (Norman Lear) and Sears Holding Company (Sears). There are also several smaller retail stores scattered throughout the city limits including two gas stations and one grocery store as well as numerous restaurants including Dunkin' Donuts restaurant which opened in 2001 along with several other large fast food chains like Wendy's World Two Chain restaurants that have since closed down or been redeveloped into larger businesses like Carl's Jr./Lenny's sandwich chain that has since rebranded itself Carlson's within Hooters Indiana Casino). Brownsburg is located near I-65 exit 174 about 15 minutes southwest of Terre Haute and 30 minutes northeast of Indianapolis via I-465 exits 176/177 eastbound/westbound respectively. Interstate 65 runs through town center forming both borders with neighboring towns while State Road 122 forms the north/south border with neighbouring village of Whitefish Heights

Brownsburg is a small town in Muncie County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muncie-Napoleon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The historical center of Brownsburg is now a ghost town, although some remains are still visible. Brownsburg was founded in 1853 by James H. Fenton and his wife, Maria J., on land that had once been part of the Shawnee Nation. Brownsburg's earliest settlers were farmers who bought or leased tracts of land from the Shawnee nation after they withdrew from Indian Territory following the American Revolution. James H. Fenton built what is now Brownburg's first home in 1853; it cost $1,000 to purchase and he built it using money he had saved from working as a cook for General Anthony Wayne during his campaigns against Native Americans in Kansas and Missouri. In 1855, when Fenton's employer moved away, he decided to move his family to central Indiana and started a cooperative farm where he raised chickens, pigs, horses and cattle until 1861 when he sold all but one of his holdings to John Leman for $2 per acre ($40 per hectare). After Leman died in 1865, the farm passed through several hands before coming into ownership by A.W. Sowell in 1868 who donated it to the local school district which established it as an academy in 1870 (later renamed Brownsburg High School). The town name "Brownsburg" was chosen because its founder believed that nothing good could come from near too many people together--a belief that would be tested soon enough when other nearby towns began growing rapidly around them while Brownsburg stagnated politically and economically . By 1880 only 4 households lived within five miles of town limits; this distance has not decreased since then (although there have been occasional additions or departures due to annexation by neighboring communities). However during Prohibition times there was significant growth with businesses opening up along la Salle Street which later became known as "the beer road". As recently as 2000-2001 Brownsburg residents increased their activity towards downtownmuncie which includes arts & crafts shows plus various events including golf tournaments etc.; also 2 bars offer live music nightly proximate downtown
