The Brownsburg Armory, also known as the Brownstown Armory, was a rifle and shotgun factory in Brownsburg, Indiana. The armory was founded in 1868 by General John J. Pershing. It became part of the Browning Firearms Manufacturing Company in 1934. The armory has been closed since 1985.
Brownsburg is a small city in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Butler, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownsburg was settled by English colonists in 1799. It became a town in 1847 and became a city in 1907. The current nameakes its place near the original capital of Brownburg County: the town site was located on the east side of what is now the downtown area of Terre Haute. The first permanent settler in what would become Brownstown was John Fitch, who arrived about 1799. He built his log cabin on property that he donated to the community for use as a courthouse and jail. The first formal meeting of residents took place on November 12, 1800 when Captain James Auld proposed naming the new community "Brownstown" after himself and two others from nearby Fort Wayne – George Washington Carrington and Benjamin Rush (an early American lawyer). In 1801 Fitch's son-in-law Nathan Goodyear opened a store at this location which continued to be open until 1864; goodyear had also donated land for an public square named for him years earlier. In 1802 Isaac Aspinwall erected a gristmill on Black River which continued to produce flour until it closed in 1880; during this time brownsboro flour mill was also started by Aspinwall's son John Ransom as well as other local mills such as those owned by Wm Hanks & Son (later known as Phelps Dodge) and Sorenson Brothers OfTerre Haute (later JCPenney). In 1840 John Ladd founded Ladd & Blackwell Dry Goods Store selling notions, groceries and hardware including self-service check cashing privileges for customers below $10 per month starting October 1st 1840 through September 30th inclusive; this operation would continue until 1865 when it merged with another business - Fenton's grocery - forming what later became First National Bank Oneida Street Branch #2A where cashier Jacob Gentry conducted transactions beginning December 15th 1860 until July 1974 when bank consolidation led to closure of branch facilities across central Indiana following Iowa departure from Union Jack banking union effective July 1972 along with most other banks operating within then new Federal Reserve System under authority granted by President Richard Nixon via Executive Order 12635 dated August 16th 1971 while still part of The Bankshares Corporation formerly known as National City Banks predecessor to today’s Wells Fargo & Co.). It should be noted that many people whose family histories can be traced back to Brownstown actually reside elsewhere within Hancock County or even outside Terre Haute proper – one such individual is Daniel Boone who resided near Warsaw before moving westward into Saline Township where he eventually established his own settlement called Booneville some 25 miles southeast of Brownsburg prior to his death there on April 14th 1830 aged 27 years old having preceded our present day village numbering perhaps 100 inhabitants at least! Brownsburg is a town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Brownsburg was founded in 1827 by General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy as a log settlement near what is now Plainfield Township. The town was named for John Browns, an early settler. The first school in Brownsburg was established in 1829 by Reverend Hosea Beecham and Mrs. Beecham. In 1847, the township's first post office was opened under the name "Natchez". The name changed to "Brownsburg" on November 3 of that year after General James K Polk delivered a speech there titled "A Model Town". The town's first hotel, Independence Hall, opened on December 1, 1851; it became known as the “Athenaeum” later that year. In 1865-66, Brownsburg built its Irene House brick building which still stands today (now used as business incubation space). That same year also saw the construction of the first railroad station in Johnson County - located just east of present day Brownsburg - which served as the community's transportation hub until 1955 when rail service died completely in Johnson County. In 1888-89, Brownsburg erected its distinctive two-story red sandstone courthouse which still stands today (leased to nearby Plainfield Township). On October 17th 1890 – during an election campaign – General James K Polk addressed a large crowd gathered at Independence Hall & called for Johnson County to be organized into townships; Brownsburg became one such township on November 3rd 1890 with over 2200 residents living within its borders! Today much of what once made up Brownsburg so vibrant and exciting has been replaced by more recent development: retail businesses have taken over most storefronts while new homes have sprung up along State Road 421/US 612 – making this once sleepy little village now one of Johnson County’s newest & most vibrant communities!
