Brownsburg is an unincorporated community in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1881 by citizens of the town of Portsmouth who had to leave their homes during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in Brownsburg on November 15, 1881. Brownsburg became a village in 1907. The current mayor and council are elected at-large with no personal election campaign time limit and responsibility for all city business other than setting zoning ordinances and creating regulations for businesses within the boundaries of the municipality. The discovery of natural resources such as coal and oil led to increased development in Brownsburg throughout the 20th century. In 1969, Brownsburg became home tothe first commercial ammunition store west of Chicago when JOE's Ammunition Store opened its doors on Shelby Street. The old courthouse that stands today on State Road 10 near US 421 also dates back to this time period and first saw use as a jail in 1824 before becoming a courtroom during the Reconstruction era until it closed in 1919 due to lack of personnel.
