Brownsburg is a small town in Indiana, located about 20 miles south of the city of Indianapolis. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Brownsburg was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army burned down part of this village to punish its inhabitants for supporting French forces during the War of 1812. In 1821, Brownsburg became a part of Hamilton County and remained that way until it was annexed by Indianapolis in 1901. The current name of Brownsburg comes from Captain John Brownsbourgh, who arrived in what is now Brownsburg on July 5, 1840 with a party of settlers and founded the village here. At one time there were over 100 residents living here; however, most died from disease or battle attrition during the Indian Wars which followed the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1861, when Indianapolis merged with other counties to become Indiana University's campus (later renamed IUPUI), Brownsburg became one of its many villages withinIndianapolis. It continued to be an important center for cultural and social activities until 1975 when it lost its school district status and all but two streets within its limits were made into single-family homes. It has since seen some resurgence as an interesting small town full of history and people who love their community - something that hasn't been lost on those who live here today either!
The Brownsburg, Indiana community was founded in 1819 by the Potters family. The first settler, Isaac Potter, arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin on the present-day site of the town. By 1830, the population had grown to twenty-four residents. The first school was opened in 1831 and operated for three years. In 1834, the town became a village and a post office was established. A store and blacksmith shop were also built that year. By 1840, the population had increased to sixty-six residents. In 1850, Jno. Hinton acquired land in Brownsburg from John Rankin and began construction of a sawmill which would eventually produce lumber for buildings in nearby Indianapolis. In 1861, Indian war veteran General David Hunter purchased 3 acres of land east of Brownsburg from Jno Hinton for $1 per acre (the land is now part of Northwest Indianapolis). Hunter used this parcel as his home until his death in 1865 at age ninety-three years old. In 1870, Brownstowns Methodist Episcopal Church was organized with Reverend James Ransom as its first pastor. The church continued to operate until 1915 when it burned down due to an arsonist's attack while being stored inside a barn on County Road 562 near Brownsburg Village cemetery. A new church was constructed onsite and named after Reverend Elijah Craig who served as pastor from 1916 until his death in 1951. After Rev Craig's death, responsibility for leading the church lapsed into disarray until 1955 when Reverend Neely Blevins assumed charge; he served until 1979 when he died at age seventy-eight years old effective December 31st. In 1978–79 an all female choir called "The Gloria Girls" performed at First Baptist Church of Brownsburg.
